I've been watching Macross. I started it a literal decade ago, but never finished it. I'm coming up to where I stopped watching originally, which was after Roy Focker dies. It's better than I remember, and I remember liking it. The Mars episode is my favorite so far.

I wish they made more Dominion. The Puma Twins were pure sex. I actually preferred their appearance in the sequel when they were redheads but it's a shame they removed the sexual element to them. How is Universe from 2018? The RE OVA and New Cutie Honey were a lot of fun, but being made in 2018 makes me suspect all the fanservice fun will be removed.

Any Gundam recs if I want more of it? I don't mind other /m/ or action genre. I've tried Tomino's other works but he doesn't have the right focus that Gundam had. 0079 definitely felt the most well rounded out of all of them and Zeta traded some of that stableness for cool and I can fuck with that. I was looking at Votoms but nothing's really clicking for me with it yet and it still has that old /m/ anime in media res shit and I fucking hate this shit. (Takes me a while to get used to it lmao)

If you don't like Tomino Gundam and don't like VOTOMS, genuinely you might like SEED.
It gets a lot of shit, mainly because it was the 'current' Gundam when this site was in its infancy, but it is fine as a standalone series and it is very easy to see how and why people might like it.

Have you tried Ideon?
Same sort of setup as Gundam in a sense, with an Earth faction being chased by a militaristic Spacenoid faction. Difference in setup is that the Gundam (Ideon) and White Base (Solo Ship) are excavated from ancient ruins rather than built for an ongoing war.
The narrative is entirely about the "Buff Clan" (Zeon) chasing down the "Space Runaways" in the Solo Ship (White Base). Its focus is primarily on the failings of communication and the desolation war leaves behind.
Also has a lot of good mystery elements in relation to the alien civilization that created this technologically advanced Ideon and Solo Ship.

It's also by Yoshiyuki Tomino, and made immediately after the original 1979 Gundam series.

Not retro by the usual hallmark (unless you count probably being older than a lot of /a/'s userbase now) but I finished pic related last night, didn't realize getting into it that you essentially have to follow the story directly into four games to see any continuation - and none of the characters even really feature heavily from what I've read. Bit of a bum note for the show to end on but it had its fleeting moments.

Retro as a term actually means the imitation of a style of the past so no.
I personally agree with the unwritten majority that 2000 is the cut off. It is a nice easy number to remember and the switch over to digital colouring happened around that time which is an important milestone for people that care about vintage anime aesthetics.
