Anon someone was supposed to argue with my hyperbolic statement. It's an okay manga with a surprisingly good CGI adaption. CGI in this case is actually okay, because I don't know how you'd even do the adaption otherwise.
The latter half is weak, but only because the first half was very good. The ending is dogshit though.
The biostuff is not at all as relevant as that picture makes it seem though. It's also neither mid 00s, nor slow and angst.

Other nihei stuff really is better though.

Post-Y2K/post-9/11 doom and gloom bodyhorror. Basically biopunk. There was an end of the world fad going on in the late 90s leading up to Y2K and there was a lot of shows still tapping into that. 9/11/war on terror era gave it a second wind that let those kind of shows coast into the mid 2000s.
