It's unfortunate but stories shouldn't always be judged for their endings and I feel like so often that ends up being the case. People will want to rush to it. They won't want to watch incomplete adaptations. Too many people wait till things are over and then binge it and move on to do the same to something else. But reading those stories in the moment to moment was were we were engaged. It's were the story is elevated. A good ending can often be a nice pay off but a lack of one doesn't change what we did in the time we spent reading. While a bad ending can taint everything.

One thing I will always pound the table about is that this manga, the anime too but especially the manga, actually is a really good zombie apocalypse story. The ecchi content actually feeds into the horror aspect a bit; as Shidou says in the manga itself, "There is no better aphrodisiac than fear."

It's better-written than a lot of people give it credit for, and it plays around with elements of classic zombie stories to fun effect. This is the only zombie story I can think of that ever bothered to mention that they'd eventually rot to nothing. It's also got a lot of fun tension with the various members of the cast having to decide just how much they're going to let go of the rules and mores of the "old world" in the name of survival and achieving success in the post-apocalyptic world.

Also Kohta is the best otaku character ever written. He actually gets to be a Chad, and actually gets a girl or two.

One really fun thing the manga does is basically put the cast through the wringer in terms of coping with the end of the world. The world is over, at least the world as they knew it. Takashi, Rei, Kohta, Saya, Saeko, and Shizuka all grapple with this and some handle it better than others. Some of them have 'awakening' moments where they realize there's no longer any of the old world's limits on their behavior. Saya does after her parents are dead. Kohta does after Asami dies. Then there's Saeko, who seems to have realized it from the beginning and fully reveals that to Takashi when they're staying the night at the shrine.

Even Shizuka, the fanservice character, wrestles with it, and sometimes I suspect that her ditzy behavior is kind of an act, and a part of her cope. Her actively trying to ignore that the world she knew is over.

It's been fun watching /a/ gradually come around on Shizuka. It's basically a post-apocalyptic adventure story with a likeable party. You could theoretically come up with an infinite number of adventures and plotlines for them to stumble into, in the world of the undead.

There is of course also the dangling idea from way back at the start: that when it gets warm enough, the zombies would all rot. Then you could tell stories about what would happen in a post-apocalyptic world in the aftermath of the zombies themselves. Would warlords arise? Would Takashi and co. amass followers and become a power? So many ideas.

Good timing, I'm reading it for the first time for October. As other anons have said I was a bit surprised by the writing, I was expecting pure schlock gore n tits, and while it's still a bit of that you can tell the writer was a big /k/ autist along with big horror/zombie guy. There's a lot of fun stuff with that and the setting, /k/ stuff with gun safety, remembering zombies probably couldn't survive hot summers/cold winters, different groups having different interpretations of the zombie threat (and the idea of intentionally dehumanizing them to make things mentally easier.) I'm still not really a fan besides the lewds, I find the characters and drama to be a bit trite and overall not particularly enjoyable, I also think while the women are great the panelling can be a bit messy with some unclear actions.
