My guess is that everything got messed up because of some sort of dimensional collision with the Digital World. Maybe it's public knowlege that Earth crashed with another dimension, but only the higher ups know that the other dimension was the Digital World, which is why the Digimon aren't well known to the public.

I started watching the original Yu-Gi-Oh! series made by Toei right before they started working on Digimon, and there's an episode that centers around Digital Pets, kind of like Tamagotchi or the original Digital Monster. It made me wonder why they didn't use this type of format for the Digimon anime since it seems like a no-brainer. Set the whole thing in a school with students who are obsessed with Digital Monsters, have each character evolve their pet into a different Digimon for variety, you can introduce new versions of the device each season as a marketing gimmick, etc. In hindsight, I'm glad they went for something completely different, and actually far more creative, but still, it is so obvious that it makes me wonder if they considered and then discarded the idea.

So basically long story short the episode has a Manticoremon going crazy and leaving giant scratch marks and if I remember correctly attacking people in a village where Ruri's ancestors lived, and the locals believe it's the vengeful spirit of a werewolf who was in a romantic relationship with one of Ruri's ancestors and was killed for it as a result, and therefore Ruri now needs to be sacrificed to appease it. Shit happens, and Angoramon evolves into Lamortmon and gets Manticoremon to calm down. But the kicker is, the episode implies the whole thing about the werewolf and Ruri's ancestor wasn't just a legend and actually happened, because supernatural shit does exist in the Ghost Game world (there's an episode where a Doumon is possessed by the spirits of the Hojo clan, which was a real japanese clan, and this is never addressed afterwards)
Ghost Game didn't really have a plot but made up for it by just being batshit insane sometimes

Good episode. My only gripe is with this scene because it makes no sense for him to turn Kyo down since he has no other leads or way to save his brother other than joining his group. It feels more like the writer went, "Well, this is the part where the hero refuses the call of adventure," rather than something that makes logical sense in-universe from his character's perspective. Other than that, solid episode. It's a bit heavy on the exposition dump, but it's all pretty digestible. I'm glad we already have a short-term goal (save Hitomi) and a long-term goal (save the brother). It gives the show focus.

Since it's confirmed to be another approximately year long show, usually what fucks these things up is the second half or last third or so becoming rote. All the characters have been established and had their character moments, the main plot is set is stone, the conflict has evolved a bit but can't end yet. So they end up spinning their wheels while going through the motions for longer than they need to instead of capitalizing on what they've established so far before having to wrap it up.

Tamers, for all its highlights, suffered from this too. Adventure didn't, though, and despite the rest of the cast lacking Mega/Ultimate evolutions, it still made sure to give them all something to grapple with in the last stretch of the show that really gave the pacing and interest a good boost. The lack of Ultimates for them perhaps helped, since it meant characters like Takeru, Jo, and Mimi ended up having more personal conflicts about their character rather than solving their problems through self actualized giant monster fights.

I think there were tons of chinkmons introduced in some chink digimon gacha and with the new v-pets together with some nip mons introduced in some webnovel they made a new digital world based on east asia(primarily china and japan) with its own host computer called Kunlun.
There were talks in some digimon lore like in shakamon's description about an eastern digital world and they decided to make it its own standalone digital world like homeros and illiad.
Most of the lore important shambala mons have been around for some time, but the new v-pets introduced some new ones and unified their lore.

I've been thinking this since the Tri movies aired. The real world and the digital world have never been this connected and the original characters are now adults with digimon, just like us, which is now the main target audience.
Considering how much technology has evolved, it is now possible to recreate the digital world. Make a game for consoles and PC and an app for phones, make them online with cloud servers, whenever you're not using your digimon in the game you can interact with them in the app and you could also use it as an alarm. Create a widget for the app so you can see your digimon(s) in the home screen and the other apps, and the same could be done on PC with a program or browser extension. Could also create a v-pet that connects to your phone via bluetooth to transfer back and forth.

Shambala was revealed as a new digital world and lots of new mons, especially in Liberator/Alysion, have lore pertaining to it but there has yet to be anything actually set in it other than the latest vpets. Yet.

Just because it fits the checklist doesn't mean it's a good design.
Everything is out of whack and it looks bad.
Just compare it to Gargomon or WereGarurumon and you'll see.
Pants just floating around the waist, proportions all over the place, Metal bits are just "attached".
And in the anime it looks 10x worse than the pic I posted.

I'd be happy with any Digital World at this point.

Just got done watching the episode. I'm glad to see that it's pretty good. Cold Heart being a recoverable thing but requiring recovery of the Sapotama with the victim's e-Pulse is a smart move and provides plenty of reason for Tomoro to have investment. I imagine there will come a point where someone will have Cold Heart, they try to recover the Sapotama just for it to be brutally destroyed or something.

Gekkomon is already growing on me a lot. He's a goofy, expressive, little guy and I'm interested in seeing what he evolves into down the line. Glowing Dawn also seems decently interesting but obviously need to see how their characters pan out.

As for the cleaners, still don't know a lot but it seems very likely that the human antagonists in the opening will be a rival Cleaner group and I'd bet caught Digimon are used to create Sapotamas, since they're pretty blatantly repurposed Digieggs. Honestly the entire system seems very conducive to a video game adaptation...makes me wonder if there could be plans for one linked to Beatbreak.

Overall 8/10. Hopefully it keeps this up.

My problem was we had two MCs who shtick was basically "I want to entertain people" between the Not!Youtube Influencer and Idol Girl. I'm not big on that standard anime motivation to begin with, but then we had two of them.

It got almost interesting when the Idol Girl ended up working with the villain's company, but they didn't linger on that idea very long either.

Astra was meant to be the trendy and current entertainer based on social media and youtube. Eri seems a lot more like she was a push by TV Tokyo to get something similar to Aikatsu and Pripara into another one of their anime.

Don't get me wrong, they had very different episodes due to their "careers" and personalities, but their motivation and drive being the tacky "I want to fill the world with smiles!" meant there was an overlap in the kind of emotional character beat that tends to make Digimon standout in the early seasons.

Like the anon said above, it's serviceable enough if you completely jettison your expectations for a show and just go along with its shallow kids show set up. But it was very tiresome to go through for me when rewatching all the old shows and then catching up on the ones I missed.

Most amazing thing is it's at complete odds to its initial premise. How Beatbreak's started is what I expected Appmon to be.

When you look at what Appmon was trying to be, it's way more explicable. It was peak, or perhaps post-peak, times of Yokai Watch's brief dominance of kid's monster shows. This informs the aesthetic, tone, and setting of the show. Everything about it is about as kiddy merchandising as Digimon ever got. The zany characters and designs, the stock footage and jingles, the works. All bent to the focus of an eye catching, modern kids show. Xros was similar, of course, but the show itself still attempted to at least try to emulate the kind of show the earlier seasons were, making it more like your Bakugans or other obvious kids toy shows where there's an almost charming clash between the obvious toy designs and an otherwise straight forward adventure show.

One must assume it was an abject failure, as Digimon fell back on pure nostalgia bait otaku pandering again for awhile after that. Ghost Game was the first thing in awhile to feel like a genuine attempt to make something that could stand on its own, appeal-wise, in awhile. Funny how it ended up being a Yokai-themed show too, but of a very different flavor than Yokai Watch. This makes Beatbreak the first show since, like, fucking Savers to try to be a classical, serialized adventure show. Unsurprising, given the director, and it remains to be seen exactly how "Deep" they'll go with the plot or character development, but Tomoro already has a more obvious room for elaboration and direction than Ghost Game did, much less Appmon.

That's what I was getting at with the tv tokyo comment. They're very gimmicky and restrained. You can see it in yugioh, pokemon, boruto and so on. A lot of the generic stuff borrowed from yugioh, pokemon, and various other popular toy anime in appmon was likely done under their direction.

Agreed completely. I should have expected that from the initial character designs given how bright they all were.

Yeah it's certainly had out of left field moments and scenes and such. the last 15 or so episodes should be ridiculous.
