Luffy is the most insufferable shonen protagonist I've ever seen and it's amazing how many Oda cultists will tell you that he's some amazingly well written character on par with some of the greatest works of literature.

Luffy is never ever put in a position where he can no longer punch his way out of every problem and the bad guys aren't anything less than moustache-twirling gigavillains who are objectively wrong in every regard. This is my biggest problem with One Piece probably, that Luffy just coasts through life without need of any introspection whatsoever

I don't mind it since it is a series for kids, but the recent(ish) grimness of Kuma's flashback and the genocide games of the Celestial Dragons are a really sudden tonal shift. Sure One Piece has always had its darker themes, but the recent flashbacks are almost tonally incompatible with Luffy's solve-it-with-punching storytelling.
