Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex

GITS: The New Movie is a direct continuation of Arise, and after its main plot has been resolved it ends right where the 1995 movie begins with the stealth assassination.
I'm sure there's some continuity snarls but the intent was for it to be a direct prequel and origin story

Kusanagi and Kuze are the same person. Each of them is half the brain of the kid that survived the disaster. The tech wasn't developed enough to turn a complete human brain into a cyberbrain yet, they had to map how the brain would reconstruct its other half.

It called a lot about how a certain kind of internet phenomena would end up. In a terrorism studies unit I took a few years ago we talked about the notion of 'the medium is the message' in the context of political violence, and the idea that it really isn't the person carrying out that act that actually gets to decide what the message sent by it is, that's really determined by the audience. All things that should be sounding pretty familiar with The Laughing Man.
Something I also love about both seasons is how these very sci-fi starting points end up coming back to some pretty mundane, real world motivations under it all. A lot has changed, but people haven't.

>2nd gig slander
Fuck no you're crazy. 2nd Gig is far more involved with the world of GiTS than the first ever was, and as a result has the ability to construct interesting scenarios regarding the technology introduced in the first season. I'm not purporting that the first season sucks or anything, just that 2nd Gig is most certainly not worse, it's better. Gohda is far more interesting than the Laughing Man.

I think the best parts of 2nd Gig were Major's interactions with Kuze and the glimpse into her past, a very subdued, subtle, and sad romance that perfectly fits the Major's personality. It's the first time SAC really digs into who the Major is, too bad it ends in tragedy. The actual conspiracy parts of 2nd Gig were kinda meh. Oh and the spidertanks stole the show again in the finale

>Gohda derivative of Laughing Man
>2nd gig glowniggery uninteresting
A regrettable simplification of a complex character and plotline 2bhwyfamalam.
Gohda worked his ass off to produce the nuclear radiation scrubbers that brought Japan back from the brink, only to be dissatisfied with Japan's place in the grand scheme of the world, what with agreeing to take on various asian refugees bogging down its economy. Gohda is also dissatisfied with the current state of the social aspect of Japan despite their (our) advancements with technology; What it means to truly be an individual in a world that allows you to sync your mind with the web and with other individuals in the name of consumption. They're all searching for something bigger than themselves, but aren't finding it. Initially Gohda wanted to be like revolutionary heroes the essayist Patrick Sylvester wrote about, but very soon lost that delusion and started to seek to reform the state of Japan to its former glory from behind the scenes by crafting a political climate that would eventually birth a revolutionary hero of its own in Hideo Kuze.
that's just my own simplification anyway.
What I like the most from 2nd GIG is how brutally honest they are with its political conspiracy. I think it was amazing how there was simply no way Kuze could have won. He's doomed from the start.

Laughing Man wasn't a villain. Sure, he was an antagonist, but he was ultimately the hero of SAC. Much in the same way that while Kuze is clearly an antagonist of 2nd GiG, he too is the hero of the over arching refugee story. Consider: The traditional Cyberpunk story is that of a rebel or revolutionary fighting against super corporations and corruption. Which is exactly what the Laughing Man was doing. We simply see the story though the eyes of a non traditional cyberpunk protagonist, the secret police, or rather, the very people that would be hunting the hero in a cyberpunk story. In a way, from a traditional point of view, Section 9 themselves are villains: a group of mostly former military hunter killers with little to no oversight or accountability. secret police. In any other story, they would be the bad guys.

So I would argue that SAC is a case of not hero vs villain, but rather a case of villain-protagonists hunting hero-antagonists. 2nd GiG blurs the formula a bit more by introducing a clear and present villain in the form of Goda for both the hero and the protagonist to fight against. Whereas SAC was more of the hero fighting the villain, and the protagonists merely being caught up in it. But 2nd GiG also comments on the whole situation through Batous comments regarding thier situation and collusion with Gouda: as a group, Section 9 is keenly aware of what they are. It's a self awareness that acts as a commentary on not only thier position, but the necessity of such organisations.

for whatever reason the episode about Batou doing his gym work and having a weightlifting/fitness star he respects was interesting to me. Even with his cyborg body Batou finds some value in the regular performance of physical activity and a routine. He's far more in touch with his humanity than his membership of a cyborg glowie group would suggest. Professional sports and athletic competitions must be whack as fuck in GITS world.
I may be mangling the correct interpretation of this and I forget just how cyborg'd up Batou is, not as much as the major surely but I don't remember.
Anyway what I'm saying is I want Batou to spot me in the gym.

The original Psycho-Pass wasn't exactly masterful writing to begin with. It feels like half a story, rather than a proper breakdown and analysis of the cyberpunk future where you die for showing too many signs of being a criminal and real criminals get off scot-free because they don't show any signs of being criminals. Akane discovers the whole system is a complete sham run by the very same kind of 'special' criminals that they're hunting down, and then does nothing with this information.

I don't mind that Akane ended up siding with the corrupt system, my issue is that we don't get her actual take on it in S1. There's no discussion of the revelation she discovered, no bitter rumination on the fact that society is a sham and her job is just killing people for the pleasure of a bunch of brains in jars. She just kinda rolls with it with no second thoughts or introspection. That's what feels like it's missing from season 1

S1's finale is an anti-ending, it deliberately leaves everything open for sequel seasons because that's what Urobuchi was paid to create. And that's why S1 falls off at the very end.

The whole point of the ending of Akane's arc is the tragedy that she is a drone. Akane says that someday, someone might stand in that room where she is now and do something. In saying this, Akane willfully misses the point that she's in that room now and can do something. That's the same mistake Makishima's bomb-planting minion made too, and he was the best person to actually do anything who's shown in the story. People punted the solution away to other people -- people they didn't even know in a society full of drones who were moronic pussies and thus couldn't be relied on.

Akane didn't pussy out because of some incidental status quo, the entire point is that she pussied out and it's also a condemnation of her society. In Season 2 and the movie, Akane at least kind of tries to bait Sibyl into making a world that doesn't suck as much ass, but she's rather realistic about Sibyl being unlikely to do so, whether it takes the bait or not.

And if you're referring to some different context other than 4chan, how can they both simultaneously be ignorant and grift at the same time?

>The whole point of the ending of Akane's arc is the tragedy that she is a drone.
It's honestly astonishing to me that people with this low level of critical comprehension can pretend like they're geniuses. At no point in Psycho Pass S1 does Akane act like a drone. She's the one person in the entire show who is thinking for herself, solving the case when her comrades fall into predictable patterns of thought that get them killed or cause them to fall off Makishima's trail. Even Kogami falls into the role of the maverick hunting hound that he was given, ironically doing everything that Sibyl wants him to do, everything Makishima wants him to do. Akane isn't killed by Sibyl the way Kagari was when he found out because Sibyl can tell Akane is much more than she seems, she's not going to flip on the System because she has two brain cells to rub together and can see it's better than any other current alternative.
>Akane didn't pussy out because of some incidental status quo
Like I said, the problem with the ending isn't her siding with Sibyl, it's that it isn't an ending. It's not an ending to Akane's arc, nor Kogami's, nor Sibyl, it's not an ending of character arcs nor of plot because of all the unresolved plot threads left on the floor for someone else to pick up for season 2.

I would accept literally anything. Anything at all other than the rushed, brief scene we got of her telling Sybil she's not going to rock the boat. This was the pivotal reveal of the entire season, and it's rushed through because the show is out of screentime, weakening the gravitas and her reaction as well.

Anon, the entire point of Akane is the tragedy that she is a drone. The elements of her that can initially seem to inspire hope ultimately do not overcome how thoroughly she is a drone, and that was the entire build-up and message to her first encounter with Makishima, along with her subsequent decisions throughout the series. Perhaps Tougami and Makishima were the only people who weren't drones, but of them, Tougami was still lacking crucial info and Makishima was a bad-faith douchebag who wanted to hurt the world on a whim and see if there was any in-group that was a better fit for him but left him out.

Wonder how easy is it to switch bodies. Do you need a whole facility, or can you just have like, a fridge that swaps your brain to a new one.

Switching bodies is a significant process that requires a doctor and a witness. You see part of it in season 1.
She is remote controlling one of her old bodies in that scene.

i've never seen it because i didn't like the gits movie but it's a kinda weird show because it's considered "mid" by westerners (like it hovers around 8/10 on mal/imdb) but chinks (and somewhat japs) consider it the best anime ever made (according to bangumi)

now i don't trust chinks because they also have cowboy bebop among the top 3, but i trust westoids less because of frieren being #1 everywhere

tl;dr: how does it compare to let's logh? obviously not in terms of genre but in terms of target demographic

LOGH (adult women who were into 70s&80s shoujo and old-school space opera) and SAC (adult men who were into futurism and gritty cop films) don't share a target demographic, not in the slightest.

I didn't mind Motoko in SAC but when you go from the original movie to SAC the difference is very noticable and a little disappointing, I loved how introspective she was originally and I wish they had given her more introspective moments in SAC.

I don't think it's gonna be a straight adaptation because they've Toh EnJoe writing it and they wouldn't bring him on for just a straight adaptation. It'll definitely be the most faithful to the manga's aesthetics of all the adaptations but it'll probably be like SAC and the movie where aspects of the manga are taken but used to tell its own thing.
