Don´t know in any other countries, but here in Spain, it´s an easy example:
If you hit a woman umprovoked (or even if you both are in a fight), that is considered a crime, punishable by jail.
If a woman hits you in the same way, its a misdemeanor, at most you get months, if not weeks, of social service. It wasn´t that long ago where, in a incident, a couple fought, the wife hit his husband 3 times, 1 was a kick in the balls, and the husband responded by slapping her once. The dude got suspended sentence (you dont get into jail if you get less than 2 years), and the woman only got an slap on the wrist.
