I would argue that it is, because the logic of the show's narrative is that the Live event is basically the next episode.
The toys were always optional. It's not like there is an episode hidden in the toys, and that the show itself explicitly set it up so that you damn well know that the toy episode is the next episode and you'll have an obvious gap in the story if you don't go and buy it.
If you don't watch the live event, there is a live-event shaped hole in your Idol Precure experience. That's never been the case with the toys, at least in my opinion.

Not strictly related to this phenomenon, but I've really started to dislike anime that just end in the middle of the story because they had 12 episodes and the manga is still ongoing. I miss anime original endings, because it at least showed that the people making the anime wanted it to be something self-contained, rather than just an ad for the manga or LN. I can just read the manga instead of watching an hours long ad that'll just leave me unsatisfied.

Meh, doesn't bother me. Vast majority of manga is not worth reading hundreds of chapters to the "end" anyway. Most series that run long languish after 1-2 cours' worth of content, and when they finally do end, it's so bad by that point that nobody cares. But they at least have good content at the beginning, so a one or two season adaptation is perfect.

There are very few series that deserve going the distance.

Damn, I think you're actually right. Like half the manga I'm reading are zombie manga that should have ended a long time ago.

There's the odd bead machine episode where the whole episode is centered around the toy being shilled but even then they were never this blatant, I don't even remember if Precure has ever mentioned real life locations like they shilled Pacifico Yokohama here. What's the point of these three episodes???? Why is the writing so bad all of a sudden? There are 13 episodes left. Will the final act really be about Jogi, Kaito and Uta? Because if so then what? It's such a shame that their first live isn't given the several episodes treatment it deserves. Where's the daily training? The early morning jogging? Voice lessons? Chatting late at night? WHERE ARE THE IDOL ACTIVITIES?

Kato Yoichi definitely still has the touch but it feels like he's either not allowed to do what he wants or he's holding himself back for some reason.

This feels like the first Precure series since... I dunno, forever, where they've failed to combine the theme with the Precure formula smoothly. Of course, I can be proven wrong by the final cour and I'll come out of this show thinking it did a good job with the idol aspect over all, but I'm not exactly instilled with confidence.

Yes, except that the songs are actually good and worth listening to at least 90% of the time, and the stage production, choreography, videography, all clearly have care and love put into them. This is reduced to a solid 40% of the time during Aikatsu Friends, but that is an extreme outlier.

Mirai and Liko are very cute (gay) friends. Liko who I find has a better personality while Mirai is basic and a tad bland.
Mofurun is ok and just there. Generals suck and I don't care what they're scheming. They're not threatening and they're not funny either.
Little exam arc they did was really bland but all that stuff in the human world episodes are much more fun.

For me it feels that way. 20 minutes isn't a lot when it's not that dense an episode compared to a 13 episode season where every minute matters.
And 25% of an episode of precure is fighting which honestly don't matter to me. I'm here for the SoL aspect for characters.
So you have 15 minutes of it which vary in quality. It's fun and enjoyable an episode and it's hard for me to describe it anything else but as this episode fine or good.

It's less of a "maho problem" and more of a "Toei problem" really.
Since the 90s they never truly made a show in a full fantasy world, at least not in the Kamen Rider/Super Sentai/Precure timeslot.
Major reason being that it's less relatable to the target audience or something, if it does have "another world" then it's typically a half/half split which SOME episodes can happen there, but not major chunks of the show.
