The last bit needed re-reading for me. I kind of got it at first, but half the time I kept looking at punpun and Aiko like "Why are they doing that" and why they were being so toxic to each other.
Also why Aiko killed herself

Looking back though, its a decent culmination of all the bullshit they've gone through. The two wanting to treat each other like the childhood friends they were but the ocean of hardships they both suffered growing up stopping that.
Both of them are constantly skeptical of one another. Aiko literally asking if PunPun will kill her. Punpun angry Aiko isn't as cold as he is when Aiko refused to stab him with the fork, etc.

Punpun stabbing himself in the eye still feels a bit retarded though. That and how it's never addressed how he doesn't go to jail for Aiko's death.

Note I haven't read it in a while. But here's my summary of why punpun and Aiko had rose tinted glasses of each other due to their childhoods, but that slowly breaks down while they are together

Also, noticable detail. When punpun is on the run with Aiko, his demon form has big horns on either side of them. He sees himself as the murderer.
As he spends time with Aiko, and Aiko tells him that she was the one who finished her mother off, his horns get smaller and smaller.
towards the end, he has a round head. Yet he still offers to take the fall for her. So Maybe he was turning it around and went from murderer to protector of aiko in a twisted way. But Aiko didn't see it fast enough to avoid her end.

It's definitely not an awful misery-fest like Punpun, but the second half of Solanin has an air of melancholy that the story doesn't really seem to shake despite the characters being cheerful and trying to move past the tragedy. It's kind of hard to describe, but the sense of loss and emptyness hangs around until the very end. Perhaps that's the point of the story and Asano's intention, but it's not something to be read for a good time.
