I always wondered about this line, on one hand, Itachi is acknowledging Sasuke's capabilities and his own failures. But I wonder how it would've gone, maybe Sasuke's innocence at the Uchiha meeting would've changed things? The original plan was to have Shisui brainwash the Uchiha, but Danzo sabotaged them so there'd be an excuse to get rid of the Uchiha. Ultimately, this might've delayed things, but the village wouldn't have stopped trying to provoke and get them killed.

It's a moot point. IIRC Itachi killed them because they were about to pull a coup. There wasn't time for Sasuke to grow up and change them. It would have resulted in total war between clans. The Uchihas would have most likely been destroyed anyway, but with far more casualties. Itachi was thinking about Konoha as a whole and not just his clan.
