She has the ability "insight" that lets her pick up on things easily, she is well aware that the MC is lying to her on a near constant basis. Realising she is no real use in the dungeon, she goes to Arty to ask for help with her fire magic. Arty teaches her some of the old ways of casting magic, that sacrifice more than just mana to cast spells for more powerful effects. Memories, emotions, rationality etc. Palinchron plays off this, he uses his ability to manipulate both Maria and Arty to make them both more unstable and play off Maria's insecurities which leads to the blow out on the hill top.
After they fight, the MC finally comes clean with basically everything (something that Lastiara has been telling him to do for a while mind you). Realising that her "Insight" skill had been used to lead her astray. Maria gouges out her eyes and burns them to ash to prevent it ever happening again.

Because of MUH CORRECTION FORCE, which sometimes is absolute and will always force through the game scenario even if the characters involved have to magically start acting like retards by the world's will. In other cases the correction force exists, but only superficially enforces the scenario and the outcomes can be easily altered, sometimes it's also medium-strong and it takes considerable effort to change events but is viable. Of course there are also cases where the villainess/villain bodyjacker/regressor is merely obsessed with the correction force existing without it actually existing.

Pryde seems like an extreme example of that and it's getting annoying by this point of the LN release, so I hope it won't drag on for much longer, considering Pryde now seems to have gone full schizo and intends to act like the evil queen just to "reach a good ending" without even considering that she could not do that.
Similar with Avalon where fatbro just keeps insisting that he has to conform to the storyline, though in his case it's at least related to extreme fear that deviations make events so unpredictable that he'll become unable to stop catastrophes from happening.

It makes it even harder for her to get rid of her doom flags since her sudden change of heart just makes a lot of people think she's being fake.
