I already shot down the argument that knowledge of japanese was needed. I do know japanese though, watching subs played no small part in me learning.

If you keep watching subs after a while you just know what sounds right or what brings you to tears. Just like how if you keep seeing humans you can tell what a human looks like and what an illustration of a human should look like, even if you yourself have no idea how to draw a human.
Moreover, people do complain when a japanese va doesn't sound right. Guest VAs like the protag of Jyu oh Sei or the love interest of Moonrise systematically get shot down here for their flat delivery and generally for being amateurish, even by people who don't speak japanese.
