Part 2 really resonates with me. My first year of college, I had to process a lot of emotions because I was basically happy that my stepdad passed away. He wasn't a bad guy, I think.

My dad had custody, so it's not like I lives with him, I only saw him and my mom every other weekend. He was always annoying to me growing up because he was kind of a manchild who seemed afraid of me when I was like 14 because I made a dumb cringe comment trying to be funny by mimicing something I saw in a cartoon. When I visited my mom on weekends, he'd hide the entire time from me while drinking and smoking. Before I finished high school, his relationship with my mom had deteriorated and they were sleeping in seperate bedrooms. They would get into screaming matches all the time because he had to retire early from the police due to a foot injury and spending all their money with heavy smoking and drinking. My mom found out he was trying to have an affair, but the other woman wasn't interested. My mom told me a lot that a divorce was coming.

Because of all the smoking and drinking, he had a stroke in his sleep. My mom found him very late because they were barely talking to each other and it was normal for him to be in the attic all day drinking. He didn't die immediately, but was in a coma. My mom tortured herself over it and said that if he woke up, she'd devote herself to him. The three outcomes were:

He'd wake up normal, my mom would be a caretaker in a loveless relationship for the rest of his life.
He'd wake up massively impared because of the stroke and coma; my mom would be caretaker of a near vegetable for the rest of his life.
He'd die and my mom would be depressed and blame herself.

I remember hoping that the last thing happened. When I got the news that his family had pulled the plug after two months in a coma, I felt only relief. I wrestled with whether or not that made me a bad person for a long time.

I wonder if Fujimoto has gone through something similar.
