Can we finally admit that H.P. Lovecraft only had about three tricks in his entire playbook? It's genuinely astounding that people still pretend this is deep or scary.
Let's break down the formula, shall we?
1. Introduce some locality he was at or pulled out of his ass by reading up on it.
2. Have a character be insane or go insane from contact with the locality and its denizens.
3. Reveal it's all been some outer space god shit fuckery, if at all.
4. Don't forget to thesaurus bash. Not even once.
5. End the story with zero explanation, allowing pseudo-intellectuals to masturbate over the "unknowable cosmic horror" of it all.
It's the same story, every single time. It's not scary. It's not thought-provoking. It's a lazy, repetitive formula that relies on fanciful wording and loose ends to avoid writing a coherent plot. You're not appreciating "peak horror," you're just falling for the same cheap pseudo intellectualism in a different costume, over and over again.
