Is it really as bad as people are saying? I watched a couple episodes (when that idol got killed and then her daughter tried to become one herself after a timeskip) and I thought the show fine.

You have a universe where PK users turn humans who surrendered into rats and enslave them, and it's more compassionate than just letting them die. It's full of offensive things if you pay attention. There was a vegan on Twitter who got mad at how Saki and Satoru only started sympathizing with the rats upon learning they were once human.

The story takes place in an alternate universe with different rules for reality where the argument for slavery is stronger, and even then it condemns it. The message is not "slavery is good", it's that people do bad things. I can't see how that's offensive at all, certainly less than one of the dozens of isekai with a modern person who instantly goes with the flow and accepts the perks of the slavery in their new world.

It's not "banned" it was just a passion project by the creator who basically animated the entire thing by himself and only wanted it to be screened in a very specific environment sorta like an art installation. I don't think that's the message at all. Shinsekai Yori is about the world being so bleak that the only way for the human race to survive with their insane, often accidentally homicidal inborn superpowers is to fuck with people's minds by splicing human DNA with bonobos and routinely brutally executing 1 in 2 children with cat demons.
If it has a message at all, then I would understand the message to be that if a society must do heinous things to perpetuate itself, then it is better off dead.

I think it goes much further than that, the person who got Ai pregnant was a boy younger than she was. It wasn't a case of "muh pedo". The author fucked with the viewership at every opportunity possible.

it's meant to be a cope. The adults in the story are framed as being evil people who do wicked things and the naive kids with more of an intrinsic sense of right and wrong fight against the adults. But the story shows us that the adults were morphed into being the evil people who murder kids and enslave and deform humans by fear and trauma. Then our plucky protagonists undergo extreme trauma and turn into the adults they used to question. But we'll do it different this time! Yeah, sure. You've already been stricken with the mind virus, as evident when the MC takes on the role of that one government lady.

1) Transgressive comedies that are basically just shitposts trolling censors, the audience and other animators.
2) Edgy slop that has tons of rape and gore and sociopath protags because it's "dark and mature like myself".
3) Hardcore hentai that mimics the content of the most degenerate and fucked up AVs.

Oshi No Ko has phenomenal direction and it's an interesting view of the Japanese entertainment industry. For those two alone it's entertaining but the actual mother plot and whatnot is a big whiff.
