They botched the chara, they failed the dance choreography, they censored the outfits.

I honestly have no why idea why they didn't bother to make this either a live action show or to have it be a full CGI show ala GBC instead of this. Having the dancing look awful when it's the crux of your theme is pretty bad, it's worse than in the average battle shonen since usually the action in those is just mindless punching for the sake of it. It's a shame since Wanda is a cutie with Osanai's voice actor but this is an easy drop, I might read the manga.

This is pretty much the perfect comparison. Both manga with amazing art, that captures complex motion of their sport about as well as you could in a paper format, but a good animated adaptation would really elevate it to the next level.
Medalist anime nailed it, the anime blew up, and it got a second season greenlit immediately.
This show dropped the ball as hard as it possibly could have, and I can't see anyone wanting a second season with this garbage CG. The best I can hope for is that they can convey the journey, and the appeal of the characters and their personal growth well enough that people will want to pick up the source material. What a sad end for one of my favorite manga.

The adaptation is unintentionally hilarious, but despite how godawful it is, it falls short of becoming a "so bad it's good" type of series. Compared to, say, Ex-Arm, which felt like it was created by aliens, Wandance is just incompetent in a very ordinary way.

People compared it to Medalist, but a better comparison would be Ballroom e Youkoso, which was also about a form of dancing. But contrary to both of these shows, it didn't rely on CGI, was superbly animated and directed. There are like 4 full pages of videos on Sakurabooru that attest to its excellent quality. It sucks that the bar in anime has come so low that Medalist, a show that looks like ass 50% of the time, has somehow become the bar.

Say what you will about the CG models (I don't think it looks great either) but the important part is the camera work and motion. This looks like an actual figure skating routine done by a professional skater. It sells you on the performance, and you can see the skill of the skater conveyed in the animation. All of that shines through despite the CG.
I would kill for the group dance routine in the club's regional competition in Wandance to have that kind of animation, CG wonkiness and all. But what we got is far worse than just some wonkiness. Instead we get something that even the most hardcore CG lover would be embarrassed to look at.

This happened to me in high school. Our school had two options for gym - weight lifting or "aerobic". I had no interest in lifting at the time (it was all shitty isolation machines anyway) so I signed up for what I thought was just running. Turns out it was the all-girls class that did stuff like pilates and other "girly" exercises. I actually stuck with it for the whole semester, despite the teacher offering to let me swap, because it was easy and we did just run once a week. There was only time I got too embarrassed and had to "go to the bathroom" and miss the lesson - it was a dance excercise, funny enough.

I don't know what it is about Madhouse anime but their fluid animation of characters drawn with such coarse thick lines looks like they're rotoing over footage of real people even when it wouldn't make sense for them to do so

Say what you will about the shitty CGI but I think the bigger potential problem is the weird pacing. Nothing much is happening but it still feels like scenes are skipping forward. Like, the scene where Kabo's friend talks to him in the hallway seems like it was supposed to be some sort of mending of bridges, but then Wanda interrupts and it just ends.
Despite its flaws though I'm quite liking the show overall

I'm into this manga mostly for the romance and I also like that Kabo is a super genius in dancing. I don't particularly care about the dancing, I have been enjoying the anime for its dialogues alone but the CGI is so bad that it feels awful whenever there's any on the screen. There are so many scenes where CGI didn't need to be there, just still shots would have been infinitely better.
