You can't make your protagonist too cool or uncool because if go too far in any one direction, you alienate half your potential face. No matter what personality you give your protagonist, someone is going to dislike it, and if someone doesn't like the protagonist, they won't give the series a chance at all, so your protagonist has to be as bland and generic as possible in order to alienate the fewest people possible.

if I was going to make an isukai I'd address it in a realistic(ish) way

Problem with modern isekai is they do nothing interesting with it.
There's a reason why people always mention the same couple of ones from like the early 2010's.
Unironically sao gate and the like are more interesting than most nu isekai MC and worlds.
