A big advantage of horror movies is that they can be done very cheaply. Horror anime is harder to make scary and costs just as much as any other anime.

Do people really like this crap? You could watch 17 episodes of house MD where they test for lupus when it obviously isn't lupus and the patient fucking dies and you'd get the same experience shiki gives you for over half of the story.

Higurashi, TSHD, and Dark Gathering are all pretty solid. There's also a yuri horror airing right now but I haven't tried it

The thing that pisses me off with horror anime in general is they have a top tier concept with weak execution. Manga on the other hand tends to be really good at horror for some reason.

This was so bad, nothing in the story matters, the characters are super dry, it ended recently and no one talks about that anime anymore, it had potential but in the end achieve nothing.

Also animation just isn't good at being scary. In general, the more detailed something is, the more scary it can be, and so making horror animation that's detailed enough to be actually scary just isn't viable.

"Another" is pretty entertaining for just being Final Destination: The Anime. I wish more horror anime had decent production values like it though, between the animation and the soundtrack. Ghost Hunt was alright but it ends way too soon. Funnily, some of the better horror moments and tension-building you'd find in anime aren't even considered horror, like Shinsekai Yori.

It's all about the presentation. Studios just can't get the color grading/style right on a TV budget unless you have a competent director.

What are you looking for in a horror anime?
Are you looking to be scared, or are you looking for a series where the characters are scared?
Unless you're like 5 years old, then a horror anime isn't going to scare you, the same can be said for scary movies
You'll have a better time playing a scary video game

Flip Flappers also had a great horror episode. Anime can do horror just fine. There are plenty of great anime style horror games too. I'd argue the real issue is certain genres just don't get green lit for anime. Japan loves murder mystery novels but how many straight murder mystery anime can you name?
