I mean at least the way I interpreted this as presented in UBW is that Shiro only becomes a miserable piece of shit if he takes the path of heroism while selflessly discarding everything he "doesn't need".
But if he takes the middle path, Which you could interpret as

He grows to become a hero without having a shitty life as he has Rin to support him.
