It's not romantic just in the context of in plot of relationships but also its sensibilities about battle coreography (everything gets one-shotted like in Inuyasha with little exception), how it deals with its central themes and how characters develop in relation to it, the light literature/fantasy/isekai homages with the naming schemes
The changing emotional dynamics are the central driving force in all characters more than anything else. There are no suprise deaths or anything you would see in a war is hell type story. Emotions dictate people's fates. Treize dies in battle, purposefully jobbing to Wufei in a fucking Tallgeese of all things because he loves battle but knows the times are changing and he cant play war anymore. Milliardo pulls the same shit Lelouch does and play into Treize's plan for the sake of Relena living in a world of peace. Wufei is left empty after realizing his nemesis just fucking jobbed to him, leaving him questioning what everything was for (which is resolved in Endless Waltz). The ending is Heero, after finally healed by opening up his heart to others (using the teddy bear as a visual metaphor), having his fucking birthday card torn up by Relena. Relena tells him to tell it to her face next time.
There are no "war as hell" type sensibilities you would see in the 0080 timeline. Gundam Wing might as well be a theater play and I like it.
