Tetsu's problem here is that he's not setting up his takedowns. He's just trying to dive in on Izawa with his head on the centerline and getting tagged because he has no head movement and he's not doing anything to occupy Izawa's guard. All the great MMA wrestlers had at least serviceable striking games that synergized with their grappling skillset. Fedor punched his way into clinches to set up Judo trips. GSP used his jab to bait counters and punish them with takedowns. Dom Cruz would get knee picks out of lead backhands. Pure wrestling simply doesn't cut it anymore.

I was always a little underwhelmed with King and this arc but I've grown to appreciate it more as the years have gone on. My main gripe was that King himself had little direct relevance to Yuu beyond the MMA jobbers wanting to fight and Yagi fucking up continuously, but I've come to appreciate his role as an antagonistic force to the entire "Holyland" as a collective entity rather than just Yuu. Leaves Yuu a little on the wayside, but it does showcase the connections that have been built and cements his position as an integral figure in this fleeting micro society they've built for themselves.
