It was all we had at the time. People really didn't know better. I remember the ending to the anime was so disappointing since nothing got wrapped up and the cycle just repeated. Sure they came back and finished everything and even did a sequel but by then is too little too late. Now on the positives; incredible OST, memorable openings and endings, good animation. I am still burned by the original series ending that I don't care to watch the end or the sequel.

I think Rumiko's style of character introductions leading to them returning to for an episode or two worked really well for a battle shonen. Kikyo and Sesshomaru being neither on the good guy team or Naraku's team was pretty cool.

It was such a missed opportunity to not have an arc set in the modern era. Rumiko already had a story where a shikon shard was in present time. This. It relies on the theme of feelings/emotions and how to cope and healthily deal with them. Naraku is the way he is because he tried to suppress and deny his feelings for Kikyo in an unhealthy manner to the point where he basically becomes a tsundere taken to the extreme (a deconstruction on the tsundere concept perhaps?) Meanwhile Inuyasha and Kagome serve as Naraku’s mirrors and foils on how to healthily deal with and express your feelings and not try to bottle them up or discard them.

It’s also an interesting deconstruction and subversion on the “reincarnated lovers” trope. So often when this type of trope is used in anime it treats both the reincarnation and their previous incarnation as completely interchangeable and just picking up right where the previous life left off, when realistically, being raised in a whole new environment, with a new family and new life experiences WOULD drastically change a person, and you can’t expect them to be the exact same person as their previous life. A lot of times these romances also come off feeling really artificial and forced because you’re always left wondering in the back of your mind “does character A really like character B for themselves or just because they happen to be the reincarnation of their previous lover?” Well Inuyasha as a series flips this entire concept on it’s head by cleverly reviving the former incarnation and having her exist at the same time as the current reincarnation to poke all the holes in this trope.

Sesshomaru was actually originally supposed to be a woman like Jakotsu, it’s why his early manga design is even faggier than the later one. However like with Jakotsu Rumiko began to get uncomfortable with the idea of Inuyasha regularly beating up on girls so she turned both into gay men instead. It’s why Sesshomaru seems so uninterested in romance (in a series where every other major character has some sort of romantic entanglement) while also wearing a furisode that’s traditionally only worn by either prostitutes or twink lovers of Samurai. It’s also the reason why he seems to harbor a major father complex, he was basically always gay for him.

It's unreal how badly the anime assassinated Kikyo's character.

Over two decades later I've yet to encounter a single anime with a suite of ED's as legendary as Inuyasha. The OST in general is top-tier.

That aside, it was a matter of right place, right time. The series appealed to a broad demographic and it's sensibilities were purely Japanese, introducing the burgeoning anime fandom in the west to anime in a way that felt entirely distinctive compared the things like Dragon Ball and Cowboy Bebop. But not than anything it came be overstated how much appealing to both a male and female demographic was a huge win for the series. I watched the premiere on adult swim with my sister, my older female cousin owned tons of DVD's for the series and movies, and my local Wal-Mart STILL sells Inuyasha shirts in the women's section.

Nobody ever seems to talk about this, but I think the artstyle carried the shit out of this show. The way they adapted Rumiko's style was aesthetic AF and the environments constantly shift between dark horror, bright nature, and brilliant supernatural themes and colors. It's a world that looks explorable and interesting to traverse, and that does a lot to immerse the viewer. That's why the monster-of-the-week shit didn't destroy the show; all those little stories about how humans and demons live and struggle were as good as the central conflict.

DnD style storytelling: Mainly because they nabbed a shard with each monster of the week (roughly), so there was always progress, on top of a threat from the big bad occasionally popping up. This was mixed in with side characters and other side quest shit to mix it up, on top of the romcom drama. This avoids the "nothing ever happens" boredom that sets in with true episodic crap, and the "no stakes" problem with an untouchable cast.
