Decent enough movie. I was hoping Kyoani was going to put effort into making the combat a spectacle, but it was usually just 5 seconds of fighting and then a scene cut. It felt like the combat scenes in the TV show had more effort put into them. Still, it was nice overall.

Will Ilulu fans ever recover?

Is it me or was the editing pretty rough? The battle scenes with Ilma and Fafnir seemed disjointed in particular, like they just slapped together random 5 second clips in no particular order. Lots of moments throughout didn’t have much time to breathe. Maybe they had to cut a lot for runtime? My favorite moment was right after the movie ended when I saw a super buff gym dude leaving the front row. I wonder who he lifts for.

Kobayashi using a spirit bomb was pretty cool.

it was a pretty fun movie, really good animation sequences as expected of kyoani, and got me emotional towards the end. still, the movie being more plot focused over the lighthearted sol comedy i love from dragon maid in the first place was to be expected, and thats my only criticism. could have also had at least one lucoa and shouta scene. solid 8/10.

I didn't expect much from her character, in fact I expected a forced cameo, but I was surprised by how entertaining she and her fleet was. Manta ray dragon stole the show for the five seconds he existed. I was thinking about the ariel battle after the movie finished.

Aside from minor gripes I have, such as Fairy's daughter, Kimun's dragon form's proportions, and some tonal issues (Ilulu's comedic anger when Azad expresses his hatred for her kind), I found the film much stronger than the manga due to its pacing.

I wanted to see Lucoa execute the blonde guy after Tohru walked away. I wanted to see Lucoa do literally anything in this movie. She shot one beam at the ground near big daddy that nobody even acknowledged. That's it.

Frankly Kanna's dad didn't deserve the redemption he got. On one hand I get it, they're playing into the theme of dragons being changed and growing from contact with humans. On the other hand it does feel like it spat in the face of the found family that frankly forms the emotional core of the series.

I don't know, I felt the added scenes were appropriate. They raised the stakes and I found myself enjoying it greatly, mostly with the telephone booth scene and how it ties into Kanna's appreciation for human life.

I think anyone who has watched the series should understand that already. But I guess they had an explain dragons thing at the beginning to try to make it reach people who haven't. I would really just prefer manga accuracy. None of the added scenes value matches to having more time given to one of my favorite characters, time which makes the ending make more sense and feel more earned.

I enjoyed the film greatly, but I take issue with Kimun Kamui’s dragon form. In the manga, Kimun takes a large, bulky, almost swollen-like appearance that plays into his bear motif. In the film, he’s much more muscular and humanoid, which i didn’t care for. Perhaps he was always envisioned as a humanoid dragon, and the bulky appearance is the result of Coolkyou’s questionable anatomy, but I wasn’t completely satisfied with how the film depicted him. His battle against Tohru was also nicely done, I appreciate how animalistic the latter becomes as she’s thrown around.

My gripes:

Just feels like the cast is funniest when their not toned down to be family friendly.

Last thing: I actually like that Kanna didn't abandon her father. Yeah he doesn't deserve it. He was a fucking dick. But Dragons are a different society. So it's not unbelievable for them to just abandon their child. While Kobayashi can act as a foster parent, it's pretty understandable that Kanna would still have this feeling of maternal longing to be loved by her biological father. To me, it doesn't spit in the face of found family, because found family can't always fill the role of everything you need. It's unreasonable to throw those expectations onto an adoptive parent from a DIFFERENT species. Also. Kobayashi won't be around eventually. Kanna is aware of this. Her trying to build a relationship with her dad while he's open to it. Is technically... Better for her in the long run. After Kobayashi and Saikawa dies... Who will she have left besides the other dragons ya know?

Hopefully so. My main complaint is that she exists to flaunt her ass whenever Kanna's not around, while also pulling the whole "I'm not old!" schtick. It's a downgrade compared to what she's set up to be, resulting in a repetitive character that does little for my enjoyment. I did enjoy her moment with Kanna and Ilulu in the bath, as it sheds some introspection on her views on Kobayashi.

I'd say there's redemption for her role in the story, so I haven't completely lost all hope for Telne.

A Monday release is such a fucked over move. With virtually 0 advertisement on their website. Even chainsaw man has a direct added button on the app just for tickets.

I think the reason Crunchyroll purposely fucks over releases like this is because they want to be able to point to poor performing releases and say "See Japan, the west doesn't want these kind of things, they actually just want more X instead." I'm sure they get a power trip over trying to influence the anime space any way they can.

Unrelated but I'll never forget their presence at EVO being just a giant space with a shitty small booth to advertise one anime. Everything they do just oozes corporate garbage. The instant they removed comments was the instant any sense of community for Crunchyroll died.

Undeniably, I believe a large part of this is due to the controversy the series has garnered in the West, while Shōnen properties such as Demon Slayer and Chainsaw Man have a larger reach by virtue of being part of the Shōnen genre. I don’t think I can subscribe to intentionally sabotaging the movie just yet, but I wouldn’t put it past Crunchyroll and its gross practices. We’ll be lucky if Blu-rays are sold in the States.

I unsubscribed from Crunchyroll about four years ago when I realized that pirating is free without the strange censorship (e.g., adding more steam over bathing scenes).

I’m on the fence with this one. I’d prefer merchandise sculpted in the anime’s art style, which isn’t great for me, as everything as of late is either uniquely stylized or replicates Coolkyou’s illustrations. Ilulu’s breasts are also absurdly large here.

With that said, it’s a great sculpt that captures the manga’s style perfectly, along with the gorgeous scale detail on her hands. Maybe I’ll get it, maybe I won’t. I’ll have to think it over.

No, but I’m sure there’s someone out there to do it. The anime figure market is incredibly vast, so it’s a guarantee that someone’s more than happy to repaint her. I also want to get this Ilulu figure by Ribose, as I like her pose and sculpt despite the stylizations, but the paint isn’t doing anything for me. I’d prefer an anime-accurate paint job. Again, those brown horns aren’t great.
