If I remember 10 years ago the king's father and his council sold out the country to the demon lord to immortality. The Prince's party killed them while the other Daikatana party with SM dealt with the demon lord. At the time the adventurer guild system had no power, there was some death plague ravaging the country - don't recall the exact details.
Current king is ruling with his adventuring party, has to ride out to collect taxes himself instead of relying on tax collectors. I recall a line about dark elves constantly practically appearing out of nowhere to cause trouble in the capital in one of the chapter introductions. The king also wishes problems could be solved like his adventuring days by just going and killing something. Haven't read past vol 8 but I've heard that the Viking vol involves trying to make an alliance or something. So I get the picture that the details that the kingdom has been in a precarious situation since at least the demon lord 10 years ago killing off a ton of their people it's just not always hammered in all the time.

5th vol had the gods watching and felt like the Gob Paladin was made for a 1 v 1 against GS, mob goblins diving to take arrows from the elf, counterspell for mages, Lizard Priest could probably take him on as well but eh. 6th vol opens with a GS expy party made by truth just to kill them. The evil wizard tower in vol 4 was said to just come out of no where, one day the roads were fine for trade the next gargoyles (Or harpies forgot which) are coming to carry up people and drop them. To me I'd explain the setting as a multiplayer Sims not!D&D edition with the gods as the players.
Haven't read past Vol 8 so I'm probably missing more example but eh.
