Unpopular opinion: Attack on Titan peaked when we didn’t know what the hell was going on. The second they started explaining things, it went from “existential horror masterpiece” to “military-industrial soap opera with abs.” Yeah, the animation slaps and the music could raise the dead, but the story? It’s like Game of Thrones with more genocide and less subtlety.
Eren went from traumatized kid to fascist philosopher faster than 4chan can argue about moral gray areas. People keep saying it’s “deep political commentary,” but bro, half of it reads like a freshman’s political science essay after discovering Nietzsche and caffeine. The final season tried to be profound and it just ended up confused and self-righteous.
And don’t get me started on the ending. It was like the writers realized too late that genocide doesn’t test well with audiences, so they slapped on an emotional montage and called it closure. Mikasa deserved therapy, Armin deserved better, and Eren deserved a podcast, not a martyr arc.
TL;DR: Attack on Titan is a visual masterpiece wrapped around a story that thinks it’s smarter than it is. Still top-tier entertainment, but calling it “the best anime ever made” is like calling a war crime “morally complex.”

I went into the first season blind. I don't know why, but the whole time all I was thinking is that they were going to find a way to turn this into Eva. I may be retarded but this time I was right. As soon as they started turning into titans the interesting premise was out the window and it became just more shounen trash.

I liked Marley and all that but right as Eren started the rumbling is when it turned to shit.
i don't understand this, marley/liberio declaration is literally the best arc by far. it all went downhill when the grisha retcon happened, that's what started the "eren planned everything" determinism bullshit

The basement reveal was as good as it could have been. It never could have lived up to all of the years of hype leading up to it, but it was still good. Marley was kino. It's only the second after the Rumbling begins that it all went to shit.

The rumbling and Eren's time travel shenanigans were fine. The very instant it goes to shit is the AVENGERS ASSEMBLE page where Isayama commits to the dumb happy ending instead of locking in with the original grimderp genocide ending. The genocide would at least have been original and cemented AoT as a classic.

i agree that it could've been salvaged if it had just ended at the rumbling page, but eren going back in time (??) and forcing his father to kill the reiss family doesn't sit right with me because it starts to get into the determinism 'eren is a psychopath and wanted this to happen all along' theory. also it twists grisha and eren's relationship, because just after grisha paints eren as a villain and tells zeke to stop him no matter what. this is really incongruent with the reading that eren is a hero and protagonist

The only problem with the Marley storyline is when they started to make more sense than the Paradisians. Seriously, one country vs. everyone else on Earth? Of course they want to protect themselves.

>i don't understand this
It should be pretty obvious. It started as a kind of horror/mystery/action series where people struggle to kill and protect themselves from weird monsters and get to the outside world, and some turn into monsters to do cool MMA stuff. Then it becomes a political drama where monsters are war machines and there's no mystery. Obviously not everyone who's into the first is also gonna be onboard with the latter. Completely changing your manga's genre and vibe should alienate most of your fanbase, OP's opinion should be common.

Maybe instead of doing the basement reveal just keep it a mystery even after the story ends. Keep the audience guessing, you know. It worked with Evangelion lmao.
You want to make it even more controversial? Have the secret be destroyed right before it was about to be revealed. Keep the audience guessing.

It's not that common of an opinion though. Everyone here keeps screeching muh Marley arc good when that is the source of all the narrative's problems. The shitty ending we got came as a result of that.

if you think anything beyond humans vs titans was a "mistake" then you don't care about the "narrative" because that stopped being the main conflict 7 episodes in. the prototype of the story was about a titan shifter, it was never muh walking dead humans vs zombies crap the 2013 audience who didn't bother watching past the first few episodes projected onto it

I don't mind at all that Eren gets stopped by his friends, actually. The whole point of the story is that killing people for their ancestors' sins is wrong, so I get why that's the ending. But the final battle is still shit.
Where the story falls apart completely is the time travel and predestination stuff. Dump all of it and the story significantly improves. Eren edgelording to get his friends to kill him wouldn't be nearly as good as him actually believing he's in the right. It pulls the teeth from the ending when it turns out Eren wants his friends to stop him, and that everything was predetermined by him. Find some other way to end the Titans instead of "Mikasa kills Eren and cures Ymir of oneitis", which is the stupidest thing ever.

It was always a political drama. Erwin and Levi scheme to have the court grant them custody of Eren in the first arc after the prologue. The entire first expedition beyond the wall was a ruse to suss out a traitor. The Historia arc and ensuing coup d'etat are just half way through the series. Most of the arcs are motivated by interhuman politics and not by muh inconceivable man-eating horrors.

It's just pattern recognition, in small and in large. Not x but y. Like x but/with y. x to y. Too much analogy and adjectivization. a, b, c. The rhythm is so constant. The overall structure of the exposition is endemic to AI writing if you pay attention.
All of it can be seen in human writing. When seen in concert, is a blaring signal.

stuff like this:

propably comes from a prompt like "write a 4chan post about..." which is why it feels the need to reference 4chan in the text. Also the TLDR is very typical for AI. Interact a little bit with chatgpt and it's pretty easy to sniff it out, especially when there is 0% effort put into hiding it
