I started Fairy Tail when I was relatively new to anime and by the time I had watched around 150 episodes I had seen a handful of other anime and come to the conclusion that there is simply no reason whatsoever to watch Fairy Tail over pretty much any other anime. I realized I would be better off watching any 2 cour anime from my backlog than completing Fairy Tail because it simply has nothing to offer.
Now I'm not saying that it's the worst anime ever made, all the popular yet bad anime like Demon Slayer, SAO and Fairy Tail are mostly mediocre to bad but not offensively so. But there is simply nothing that makes it stand out, every single aspect of it is done better by other anime, the worldbuilding sucks, the characters are uninteresting, the fights are boring. If at all there's even less of a reason nowadays compared to when I watched it because light novel fantasy has completely swamped the industry with generic fantasy settings with magic and dragons and guilds.
The only positive aspects of the anime are the character designs with lots of hot girls and the good soundtrack. Mashima should do the world a favor and give up on writing mediocre adventure manga and just do a full ecchi series.

I remember picking up Fairy Tail when it first started way, way back in the day. At the beginning of every arc I kept telling myself "it's about to get good, it's about to get good." And every time, it didn't get good. I read it all the way up to the final arc and then I burned out, not just on Fairy Tail, but on a lot of anime and manga in general. I eventually went back and read the final few chapters years later, but my big takeaway from Fairy Tail is that it's absolute fucking garbage, amongst the worst shounen shit I've ever read.

Do yourself a favor and watch Dragon Ball instead.

Fairy Tail is a series where nothing happens. The status quo is unchanged from the beginning even at the end. Even literal time travel and parallel world arcs don’t result in any kind of significant change for the characters or the world. It’s impressive in a way. Fairy Tail is the definition of slop designed for mass appeal. I’m honestly shocked it was written by one guy because it has all the hallmarks of being safe designed-by-committee crap.

Fights are hit or miss, with a big emphasis on the miss later on. The fights in the last arc basically devolve into the villain kicking the asses of the good guys, the good guys getting a power up and then finishing the villain in a spread with the hero doing an action pose while the villain is defeated in the background. And the sequel manga is even worse in that regard, although that one has the best fight of the series in a while (Erza vs Laxus).

I think both of you are right in different ways. True, Fairy Tail characters may not be super deep, but they're very likeable and that makes me enjoy their presence a lot. Like for example, I love Laxus and even though his character peaked in Tenrou island I get excited anytime he gets spotlight because he's a walking hype machine and I know he will deliver a cool moment. In general the core cast is pretty solid and the reason why I sticked with the show for so long even though I think 100YQ is something that exists and Mashima simply does because he has to.

In regard to Fairy Tail's characters, I think the weakest point are the villains, since the story employed a system of different villains per arc instead of having a central villain through the series (sure, Zeref and Acnologia fulfill that role, but their appearances until the Alvarez arc are so sporadic their presence is only alluded while other less relevant villains take the spotlight for an arc) and most of Mashima's villain tend to be arrogant assholes who only exists to make the main characters look cool. It was the same in Edens Zero where most villains are Akame ga Kill tier psychos made to be hated and have little charisma. I guess it makes sense that since Mashima does simple stories the conflicts he made are simple too, but I feel his villains end up being too samey after a while with a few exceptions.

I'm glad we got Chrono-Rebecca as the final boss instead of this fraud. Not that the fight itself was anything that great, but she came out of it still being the most dangerous being in the universe.

The cast is so bland and bogged down generic cliches that dont really develop organically and all feel like a entitled hive mind of brutes and gags, and a bit of hypocritical dicks to other guilds about theirs being the best.
