What makes a good anime review?

a bad one is full of complaints to the point where you know that the "reviewer" already hated it from the get-go and are making excuses for them to justify their negative review of it
a good one i guess is one where it's fair in its assessment and the reviewer doesn't sound pretentious. this review for instance is all over the place and he's complaining like watching it makes him want to kill himself

It's EXTREMELY simple:
A good anime review can separate themselves from their personal taste. Even if they personally found it extremely boring, they still have enough understanding of the people who like those sort of shows to identify what the strong points of the show would be to someone who does.

For example, I can't stand CGDCT anime, so I honestly wouldn't be able to tell you what makes Gochiusa such a cult classic compared to similar shows (even though I've seen it). A review that just says "this show is boring, I slept through it" wouldn't tell anyone anything besides I don't like the genre as a whole.

None of these points actually address the content of the work. You can't string together a bunch of hyperbolic statements and expect it to count as a review.

This seems like a good review, not the best but WAY better than the usual "reviews" that proceed to simply describe the anime and end or start with "and that's a good thing" or "and that's a bad thing".

That would be stupid, reviews are ver subjective and it will present your own opinion. I agree that a review just saying "it's bad because it's boring" it's extremely lacking, it would need actual justification like why some jokes are bad or if the series has a bad comedic timing

A good review is someone who first establishes credibility, references other anime as good examples, and gives insight to the inner workings of the industry.

He is 100% correct though. It's an incoherent mess of half-baked ideas, and I seriously doubt that the author himself understood what he was trying to say. The characters are stand-ins for abstract ideas and therefore lack any characterization. They do not behave like humans which makes it impossible to empathize with them.

I don't believe in good or bad reviews. It's all subjective. The only way for reviews to be useful is if you know a particular reviewer whose taste already aligns with yours.

If you don't see any of those them it's a good review.

You read good reviews for shows you think you are going to hate and bad reviews for shows you think you are going to like, simple as.

There are almost no good western anime critics except for ThatAnimeSnob and Digibro before he trooned out. It's a medium that attracts really dumb and shallow people for the most part, compare it to film or literary or even video game criticism and they're so far ahead.
