Tbh, I would argue that this is an issue with Precure love interests in general. It's just amplified with Kaito because he barely gets any screen time. We got to see a fair bit of Takumi's family and relationship with Yui, but for the latter he's just defaulted to liking her due to the osananajimi trope. His room is hilarious since it has a bunch of generic boy stuff (weights, gaymer chair, soccer ball, guitar) so it's not like any thoughts were put into what his actual interests were beyond protecting Yui.
