the series doesn't really hinge on romance itself, more so in that these relations come in multiple forms while growing up and getting old. there are a few different forms of love throughout the series, all of them are pretty interesting
ofuyu frequently gets flustered when characters ask her if she's interested in sanda, but sanda's also pretty ignorant. he gets another love interest in niko, literally his government-assigned wife for the purpose of ensuring the future of japan, but even she also starts to question if sanda really loves her or WANTS to love her since he's much more engaged with ofuyu in her eyes, mainly due to their bond from the events of the first few arcs that the anime is going to cover. which gets pretty sad, she tries her damndest, and she's cute. there's like 10 more chapters of the manga that need to be translated so i haven't bothered looking at how the series ends, but as it stands currently, sanda devoted himself to protecting ofuyu. whether that ends up becoming love, i don't know yet lol
