It's weird that some people still maintain that Evangelion was some scathing critique of fanservice, otaku culture and shipping when the rebuilds have gratuitous sexualization (whenever the show had some sexual element it tied back to the themes it wanted to explore, this is not a thing in rebuild) and fanservice in quantities MUCH higher than the original

I generally don't mind cosplayers and like a lot of them but Asuka cosplays rub me the wrong way because she's just too perfect. I don't have this reaction to any other character cosplay from any series

That's because Westerners have this tendency to interpret this into Japanese works when that's not the intention of the creators.
Same way people think Perfect Blue is a "critique" of the idol/entertainment industry. Satoshi Kon went on record saying that isn't the point of the movie at all and that it's just Westerners misunderstanding.

I suppose the point Anno is making is that a little bit of escapism, fanservice and stuff is fun and good, but at some point, you gotta turn it off, get off the coach, and go back to the real life. Like the good ol' isekais for children that end with the heroes leaving the fantasy world behind.

I think it's pretty neat. It's not uncommon for writers to self-insert their own issues into a story. I do love how Shinji confronted Gendo and solves Gendo's own detachment issue and him unable to accept Yui's passing. Something that EoE/EVA never bothered to address.

Doesn't matter now, Khara successfully sued Gainax for the rights to the entire Evangelion IP, which is why they were able to do that McDonalds commercial with the original designs, such as Asuka having noticeably redder hair than Shikinami's strawberry blonde mane
