Shin is a sequel to 70s series (no need to watch it beforehand) so theres bit more fanservice but there isnt much of horror elements,just some myth stuff and sci fi

Was it ever explained why Nagai developed this weird tsundere hateboner for Great Mazinger? I know the series didn't do as well as the original but he just seems to ignore it whenever he isn't obligated to use it. Grendizer U is the most recent example since they ignore that Great is supposed to be happening in the same timeframe and it's why Kouji is with Duke.

I think Nagai just sees it in a similar way to how the audience reacted back then (it's too similar to Mazinger Z).

Note in Nagai's own manga AUs, Tetsuya was in Violence Jack, MazinSaga and Z Mazinger, it's just the "Great Mazinger" itself that didn't get a counterpart in those manga. Tetsuya and Great also appeared in the Nagai Grendizer manga, unlike in the anime.

And Grendizer U was already rushed and barely had time for its cast. It really didn't need even more characters.

The currently running and almost finishing Mazinger Destroying Hell manga does have a Great counterpart though, it just debuts fairly late.

The first chapter was kind of messy. It's like a battle royale where the protagonist (Shiren) suddenly wakes in the "Mazinger Zest" and then is forced to fight against other Mazingers, with some flashbacks to his previous life. Then after time runs out, he's taken to a dock and prepared to the next battle. He's in this situation for the entire manga with some reveals about the outside world through exposition later on.

Half of the series has him fighting small variations of Mazinger Z, although in the 2nd half they start referencing other Nagai stuff, like there's a Groizer and a robot based on Sirene from Devil Man. The Great Mazinger-like robot also only appears by this point.

I encountered this series by looking through a pirate sites list of Go Nagai related works. This did not disappoint and makes me wish I got to see the mecha stuff from back then as it was happening. Super robot shows could also be revived imo. Getting tired of demon stuff. Though Mazinger is pretty good blend of the two, lol. Go Nagai using his designs like actors in different plays like Disney kinda did with Goofy, Donald, and Mickey is pretty charming.

This is my favourite Mazinger story, it rewards you more for how familiar you are with other Go Nagai works, but you're already in good hands if you have a love for Mazinger and super robots. It starts off a bit miserable and edgy but I hope it doesn't give the impression that the entirety of the manga's like that.

Even if you know about the ending or certain major plotpoints, it's still quite a ride. I think I knew of a handful of plotpoints at least for the original when I read it, but not the order that it would show up, so it sort of worked out.
