It's a prequel that is very good on it's own terms, but fucks some minor things up for the thing it's a prequel to.
Not even due to spoilers, although there are major ones, but due to a bunch of mischaracterization and pseudo intellectual wankery.
It's urobuchi after all, but it's urobuchi at his best.
It's still very entertaining though.

Ignore the dipshits here making watch order suggestions. It really doesn't matter that much.
I started with the DEEN FSN adaptation, then watched FZ and then read the VN and then watched ufotable's FSN adaptations as they came out and I still had a jolly good time with it.
Just watch FZ if that is what piqued your interest.

Very little is ruined by watching FZ first. Some say it spoils HF, but honestly, all it does is recontextualize the character's actions into a mystery as opposed to a surprise. I don't think it takes away the bigger impacts of certain scenes.

You're in for a death battle royal with some very interesting characters.
You have cool secret mage societies, chuuni no-nonsense hitmen, esoteric magic stuff, lots of poetic suffering and pseudo intellectual wankery.
and some of Kajiura's last great work before her music style went way to overboard with the orchestal bombasity.

Please play the visual novel first. If you end up liking the series you are doing yourself a great disservice by not experiencing the plot twists in the manner they were meant to be experienced. You will never forget about fate if you like it.
Deen anime of fate is bad
Ufotable ubw is amazing but missing shirou internal monologue and the story is less good without fate route as a backdrop
Heavans feel can stand on its own but the progression of fate->ubw->feel is important
Fate zero spoils so much in a manner you won't care about it but after having a full understanding it is amazing to see

Here is the real deal:
- Fate and Ubw are fake routes but they deliver their purpose to deceive the viewer.
- Zero and Heaven's Feel make the canon story, but you should never watch them first because they reveal all secrets and solve all hanging plots.

So, watching order:
- Fate(Deen series), or a summary if you can't stand the quality.
- Ubw series (Ufotable), discard the Deen movie.
- Fate Zero series (Ufotable).
- Heaven's Feel movies.
