It's the difference between people who grew up in reality and people who grew up watching anime. As Miyazaki always says.

Oh I absolutely agree. the best stories come from working off of experiences and memories while adding a touch of fantasy to it. And this goes for all genres. You can make an entire fantasy world but your characters have to feel grounded and realistic inside the fantasy world. People always make the comparison to large fantasies like legend of the rings or Harry Potter for example. But a lot of those characters feel grounded in their reality with a touch of unrealistic personality traits but their choices feel grounded. They don't make weird and stupid choices that don't make sense. They tend to make sense when you put your head in the mindset of the character and their experiences. Hopefully that's a little understandable I have a huge headache

It is completely understandable. Nerds and especially sci-fi nerds tend to lose themselves in the spells, and spaceships and forget that what made the original sci-fi/fantasy so great is that despite not being set in reality, it was telling stories about real people and giving us insights about the real world.

When you completely lose that essence, you end with Isekai and wish fulfillment fantasy tropes, where elves don't represent pureness, and ethereal qualities but only sexy objects. The protagonist doesn't' need to grow or learn or go through hardships.
There's no battle between good and evil, orcs and demons because orcs and demons have always been evil in fantasy books, and the protagonist is good not because of his virtue or character but because he's the protagonist.

I think megazone is so great because of the pacing and agency
you really feel the villains are constantly on the move and the side plots involving the main cast are endearing while the main story weaves in and out of them

I want to write more to reply to this but you essentially have said what I've been thinking for me. People have also seem to have lost the ability to talk to those who are strangers or elderly. I've talked to a lot of people, simply because that's part of my job, but you also absorb those stories given to you from other people. A lot of people nowadays just talk online on social media. They don't interact outside of their bubble. You can even look here at the whole cross boarding culture as well to be a subset of that.
How do you share stories of real human interaction when none of your interactions have ever been in person. This matters especially in animation because you can't just write about what the other people are feeling you need to show what the other people are feeling and that also includes body language. You can even be autistic I'm still understand how body language works between two people even if you do not understand it to yourself. I would also say that perhaps to a modern manga artist a lot of their interactions are usually done by a phone call or email they don't have to walk over to their editor's office they don't have to even be in the same room as their assistance now with different screen and other types of window sharing. Even simple day today interactions are something that doesn't really happen. So they called upon interactions from middle school possibly high School which does tend to reflect on a majority of the industry. This is just me hypothesizing I'm certain that what I say has a small factor but it may not be the main factor of why that genre is popular you can also include wish fulfillment. Either way I'm glad that someone else feels the same way about it.

Yeah what you guys are saying totally agreed with. Talent + Experience + Relatability (which comes from life) really make good products. I have been studying artists lately and noticed a trend that their most famous pieces are reltabale and/or have a strong historical importance. Edward Hopper's Nighthawks, Iiya Repin's Ivan the Terrible painting, Basquait's Untitled, etc. The same for any hobby. The moments that stick with us are the ones we can relate too the most and/or are the most significantly impactful to the story or characters.
Shoot, even early Spongebob Squarepants is an example of this. Hillenburg made this interesting and funny cartoon that did so well due to its relatability and humor. We all know characters like seen in the show to some degree, so it has wide appeal. Then later seasons after he passed seemd to completely lose that and go 'uhhh Patrick dumb, Squidward mean, Spongebob quirky' etc. They don't understand the appeal itself, only that there was an appeal.

Conceptually, Megazone is amazing. The animation is hit or miss, with some great sequences and a number of goofy cheap-out moments. And meanwhile, the dialogue is wretchedly bad, like it was written by a dumb teenager. It's definitely worth a look considering how much creativity was put into it, and how influential it was, but it's not something I'd suggest to someone who wants interesting characters.

I meant all the series in the franchise. That would be the first place I would think to look if you wanted more, although the shows under the Time Bokan banner diverge quite a bit from the original, aside from recycling the villain trio. If you did watch everything I was going to ask your thoughts because that would be quite a lot to complete, Yatterman alone is over a hundred episodes.

No, just bits and pieces. I'm partial to Ippatsuman, but that's a later entry which is considerably more superhero and mecha oriented, and Itadakiman, which is just completely off the rails. I would at least check out Yatterman, which was the second entry in the series, and ended up eclipsing the rest in popularity. It might be worth it to check out Tatsunoko's original shows from the 70s and early 80s, they were doing some unique stuff that has never quite been imitated.

Watched the first two episodes of Votoms and liking it so far. Did not expect the series to take place in the post-war, although the conflict's resolution seemed to come out of nowhere, maybe it will be expanded on in a further episode. No, implied sex is not sex.
Urotsukidoji for example had sex in it because you could clearly see them having sexual intercourse in it. It was not implied.
Armitage had some fade to black crap and gave you the implication they "had sex" but despite being an OVA not held back by tv standards they did not show them actually having sex.
For all we know they just lied there doing nothing for awhile.

After ink and paint was phased out, but before 3D modeling was heavily instituted there was a period where most shows were just flat 2D animated in photoshop and other type programs. Some series found their footing like Fullmetal Alchemist, but other studios struggled to get the look of the new format right, and action shows ended up looking stodgy and strangely colored. Fortunately there was a story type that played well into this era: Girls going to high school. This is the birth of cute girls doing cute things. Azumnga Daioh, Lucky Star, Ichigo Marshmallow shows like that took the basic animation they could do well on the new tech and created a movement...Or a monster depending on who you ask.

Watching Devil Hunter Yoko right now and why is the manga so different? The manga is about a dog thing she finds, but she is super pure, classical magical girl. In the anime she is a turboslut and for some reason episode 5 and 6 have completely different art styles. What's the story behind this?

Oh hey this thread

>here and there, now and then
Well, this fucking sucked major fucking balls. The backgrounds look nice and the animation is decent through the whole runtime but that is as far as i go with positives. The story sucks thanks to all characters being retarded and sometimes annoying to an unacceptable degree, im genuinely surprised at how much people seem to like this one. 2/10

>ebichu
It was fine, surprisingly bloody for a show clearly aimed at women. The jokes are hit or miss but even when they miss its not aggressively unfunny, just a bit repetitive with the punchlines being either "lol sex" or "lol fuck ebichu". The ebichuman segments were some of the best part and its a shame there is only 3 of them. 5/10

>utena
Just started, 3eps in but its pretty good so far, also clearly made for women but i can see being nice to men too. Utena is a great protag and the visuals and presentation have been pretty stellar, though i wonder how much runtime will be recycles like entering the arena or pulling the sword out. Worse part so far is that awkward exposition of ep2 in the student council.

Gorg is a neat cool show with a lot of charm. And it's pretty unique as far as my experience with 80s shows go.
There aren't many shows of the time that are as explicit with the linearity of it's plot. Usually they play with a MotW format with some elements being relevant to further the plot. But not gorg, every episode ends where the next starts. And i think that's pretty awesome.
Oh and the ost is great.

Interesting that you mentioned Now and Then, Here and There and Utena, because I thought both of them were kind of stupid, but it ended up bothering me more with Utena.
I agree that there's some off the charts stupidity in Now and Then, but I think I just started to accept it because it's not just the MC who seems to have brain problems. Eventually I just started to feel like idiocy and misery were key themes to the show and accepted it as is.
Meanwhile with Utena I just found the initial premise stupid, and found it hard to respect all of the characters who are buying into the contest. I will say that eventually it did offer some catharsis to me, but it was a long time coming and it was never really a show that I had visceral enjoyment while watching it.

By the way, Ebichu was a seinen manga by a female mangaka, for whatever that information is worth.
Anonymous No.283305425 [Report]
>>283305006
I havent gone far in Utena at all to tell how stupid it gets, but the fact that the "husband" can just magically pull a sword out of the jeeta's body and the giant castle in the sky you can only see in certain conditions does lead credence that the whole "change the world" power they can get from the contest to be real, so maybe it gets dumber in some way.

Here and There though, because its clearly aiming for a message so overdone with such weak fucking characters it makes me extra mad. I can put aside the MC's own extreme stupidity as its supposed to be symbolic of the modern man/values or fucking whatever (its not forgiven though, im just a little more lenient), but every other fucking side character is also so stupidly annoying or retarded; the cartoony dictator, his retarded second in command, the walking mcguffin, the village bitch, the setting having an easily accessible time travel/dimension travel available to it, its too fucking much. The only redeeming factor is Sara and she is hit with the retard bat at the end for not even keeping a rapist baby, no, but for deciding on staying on nightmare land for ZERO reason. God im getting mad just thinking about it.

>By the way, Ebichu was a seinen manga by a female mangaka
Makes sense, Ebichu being female itself was enough of a hint at it but the show just seemed to be very feminine on how it handled topics, not really bad, just different.
