Naruto is a gateway anime of the worst kind.
It's a bad series, a clusterfuck of story and characterization that isn't very well done by any aspect, but which attempts to compensate for its weaknesses by adding in excessive shipping faggotry and DARKNESS. The normal anon can see this as the shit it is, and may enjoy it, hate it or be indifferent to it, but all the while recognizing that the series itself, regardless of their opinion, is plain bad. One Piece was too goofy and the lack of an acceptable English dub really hurt its accessibility.

I was 11 when the dub premiered, but even I knew it was already popular on manga websites. My cousin was probably 19 or 20 at the time and was into it before the dub. The anime had started in 2002 and already had a subbing community, and there was a lot of Sasuke fan art by people in their late teens/early 20s.

But 4chan was created in October 2003, and 2004 was utterly filled with outages to the point it was hardly usable. 2005 was the first year 4chan was actually online all the time, so while there may have been Naruto fans in those days, it wasn't as big of a deal. It was definitely towards 2006 that things started gravitating towards what they would become.

I remember the gap. I sat through all the English dub filler episodes, waiting until they inevitably got to Shippuden, but in Canada we never got it (to my knowledge). Kept up with the news, and I decided it just wasn't worth it by the time I heard it started airing censored on Disney in the US. I had read chapters of the manga before, long before they had gotten adapted, but it was right around the point Sasuke killed Itachi and Tobi started telling him the history of the Uchiha and Senju that I picked up permanently and began reading from week to week. Similarly, I switched to reading Bleach from the middle of Hueco Mundo right around the time Ichigo became his super Hollow form while fighting Ulquiorra. I remember when Ace died in One Piece, but I didn't actually start reading it until the end of Fishman Island.

To this day, I'm missing huge gaps of Bleach and One Piece. I only read the Kazekage Rescue arc for the first time last year in Naruto.

Having only read Naruto in its entirety last year, part 2 really does drag for a while. There's novelty at the beginning, but it's such a downgrade to what came before it, and it's only following Jiraiya's death that it starts to pick up, though it never quite feels like it did in part 1. That being said, I think it's a far more cohesive story than when I was reading it from week to week (I read all 700 chapters over a week), and when you can see the big picture, it feels better overall. Naruto's character development is more clear, but when he's spending over a real life year whining about Sasuke, it doesn't ring as well as when it's only one day while reading.

I had always preferred the Sasuke Retrieval arc of the anime, but after reading everything, I really do appreciate the Chunin Exams far more and think they introduce so much that would shape the story to come. The story is also fairly thematically coherent in part 2, even when you begin to notice the logistical cracks and rewrites.

BLEACH has the problem of Kubo not letting Ichigo be a soul reaper despite his dad being one and giving up Rangiku as his secretary to be a medic. He doesn't have a reason to oppose Aizen despite old man genocide being okay with him unga bunga and could benefit if he was assigned to the fifth division.

Hollow Ichigo calls him out multiple times.

Should I give Naruto a try? I'm midway through Bleach and I started One piece.

It's worth reading at some point I think. I wouldn't choose to watch the anime first at my age, even knowing that it elevates a lot of moments (Naruto vs Sasuke at the climax of part 1 goes way harder in the anime). There's a lot of sakuga throughout. But read the manga, get the main story, and maybe tackle the anime down the line. I think I'd be more interested in seeing filler stories on the simple basis that they're additional character stories I'm not familiar with, and I wouldn't be annoyed at their presence since I already know the full main story.
