It was fully expected to happen at some point, additionally the revelation about 'Crima in the last chapter gave Angvall's sudden resurrection a really rushed and dulled feeling, at least to me. The timing of both these major plot points was pretty poor in my opinion, just thrown to us one after another after a very lengthy battle arc without any time for readers to have a breather and build up the anticipation for something sinister happening a bit later. Also everything being connected to Helem is getting a bit tiring. Don't get me wrong, this does not absolutely ruin the series for me and I'm not dropping it anytime soon, but there is a lot that Tohru could have handled a bit better in my opinion, both storywise and with pacing.

Child of prophecy escaped, even made contact with witches who are also a part of the vision.
Enemy became stronger, gained more allies, battle experience and new skills.
The plan failed, and yet... she smiles.
She's so content with this trainwreck that she even discards the cold logic that brought this plan into action.
On a whim Elstri decides to spare two people, abandoning the only not failed goal of this meticulous, months into making plan because "she's in a good mood".

And when maid questions about it, Elstri together with Helem simply respond with *the look*
That one stare communicates soo much.

On top of that I feel like the mangas popularity did pick up steadily after the Elstri/Arkos reaching the village part of the story, a lot of the popularity isn't because of Julian. Random shots of Angvall in the sea drew a lot of people in too. I suppose to sum it up I think the great character designs in general draw more people in than Julians story
