Of course things can't be too slow but 40-60 chapters to build up to a kiss/relationship is usually the sweet spot. It's just that, ever since Otonari no Tenshi-sama, authors have been realising that maybe people don't necessaily want their het romances to be power fantasies. Especially not "harems" with a hopelessly dense MC that invariably end with one girl winning. She’s really grown up a lot, good for her.

I want more HimeYano though. Mitsuki is so autistic that anything involving her is hilarious and adorable. Of the four main characters, Hime is honestly the one who hasn’t grown that much since the start, despite being the cause of almost all the drama.

Just because the setup feels like wish fulfillment doesn't mean the characters are all empty or lack chemistry, like one simply revolves around the other for the kindness of existing. Wish fulfillment isn't really a criticism on its own, it's essentially a genre. Yuri generally feels like the writer thought up a complementing couple and put them in a situation. Het generally feels like the writer thought up a boy or girl the writer is hardcore into, gave them all the plot, then put up a stand-in afterthought for them to crush on and inherit all responsibility. OPM is kind of a special case because S1 was animated by a dream team and couldn't realistically be replicated by other studios, but for S3 they just didn't give a damn and put a completely unqualified director on it. We all know the reasons for the Sasakoi shitshow, but it's not down to an animation style or a mere lack of budget.
