The good thing is that the Japanese fight back everytime someone tries to attack their stuff and they've succeeded for decades. The problem is that they aren't terribly good at preserving a lot of things, especially to do with art. I could see quite a few manga and doujin becoming lost over time simply due to the people who post them online losing their copy of the files. A lot of those kind of things are brought back by their creators. Japanese have a much more mellow mindset where, if you experience it, you experience it. There is probably an untold amount of animations, comics, figures, etc. that are sold at local Japanese conventions that never make it to the west and are essentially forgotten outside the ones who bought/experienced them.
