For those unaware:
https://okinawa.stripes.com/community-news/what-are-these-veggie-creatures-used-for-japan%E2%80%99s-obon-holiday.html
>During Obon period, some families make a small horse out of a cucumber and a small cow of out of an eggplant. The legs are made of chopsticks or matchsticks. These are called Shoryo-uma (horse for souls). Usually they are placed with an incense burner outside of the entrance of a home on the first day of Bon to welcome that ancestors’ souls.

>It is believed that the souls come back home quickly on a cucumber horse, tracing the trail of incense, and leave later slowly on an eggplant cow. The horse and cow are placed on altar on the second day. People will display them with lanterns, flowers and food items around the altar.

Copying some notes about this chapter:
>In the raws on the fifth panel of >>283416650, the owner uses the phrase 首が飛ぶ (kubigatobu, literally heads will fly) which is a Japanese idiom for someone threatened with being fired similar to how we might say someone/something is on the chopping block/getting axed. It was translated literally in this chapter as the female employee's head will roll which is funny given how later in >>283416770 & >>283416795 we see that it was the owner's own head is literally lopped off perfecting the pun in both Japanese & English.

I think it really is her. Even the way she insists on him telling the stories sounds like a mom nagging her son to eat his vegetables. She's obviously evil now given that she's possessing an innocent girl and Yuuma's only friend. And also killed the two cops who were trying to help him. But, if Yuuma's own ghost stories are to be believed, even previously good people can become evil spirits.

>>283420026
As you can see, it is the same book Yuuma was reading in the library in >>283419864 which now sits on Hina's bookshelf.
The framing of Hina's bedroom mirrors Yuuma's (bed on the left/door on the right vs. the opposite for Yuuma).
Hina is wearing the same Dark Star-decorated shirt Yuuma would often be seen in (first appearance in Ch. 19 and last in 97).
Hina also has a stuffed doll (in this case a rabbit) like Yuuma's horse plushie Umakin.
She has the same 100-day calendar on her wall now as >>283420079 caught
Ch. 1 begins fading from black with Yuuma switching on his desk lamp while Ch. 100 ends back to black as Hina switches her's off.

Yuuma couldn't go through with the 100th story to finish the ritual so he killed himself to put a stop to it. Hina feels sadness and longing to see him again so it's hinted that the final chapter is the start of her own Round of 100 to bring him back.

Thank you, OP. I've read this before, but this was my first re-read. You see so much more in the stories when you know where it's all heading.
Like how the 99th story is a summary of Yuuma's and Hina's story. The older sister unintentionally drew her younger sister towards danger trying to save her from her plight. She successfully saved her younger sister while remaining in the doomed state she started in. But the younger sister plunged in to follow her anyway.

The 99th story was about someone who got dragged into a toilet by a ghost and didn't kill themselves but everyone believes they did. In his conversation with Hina at the school, he quotes a character from his stories that didn't kill himself but everyone thought he did. Did the Mom possess Yuuma and write that letter and then kill him?

On the one hand, the chapter did go into Buddhist stuff about lingering attachments and Yuuma's note suggests that he may have been free of regret. On the other hand, someone was listening to Hina. Although that isn't necessarily conclusive.
Yuuma had reason to believe his mother was lingering in the world because of the crashing plates to save him even before he started the stories. Hina had no such sign. So there's even more room for doubt that the entity she's talking to really is Yuuma than there already was about that ghost really being Yuuma's mom.

Thanks for the dump. I didn't expect I would like it when I stumbled upon a thread because horror is not my thing, but this was a very fun read.
The ending fits the story, but I was expecting a little more catharsis, so it doesn't sit very well with me. I agree with Yuuma that the stories give more hope to both worlds and, within the context of the story and themes Yuuma killing himself is probably a kind of happy ending compared to him killing himself at the start, but I can't imagine either of the rituals going well for the involved parties.

Honestly, Yuuma took a hard choice even if it was an inevitable conclusion to what he started. Get his mom back in the living and hope things get better at the cost of the person that tried to save his life, or take his life anyway to be with his mom without the neverending hell of home just so he can save Hina anyway. It's an understandable choice, even if it effectively renders the series "for nothing" besides what Hina ultimately learned from the experience. There was never going to be a happy ending for Yuuma and she probably is full aware of that now which is why she's torn up about it but able to move on realizing the irony.

You're right. This was an extraordinarily well-planned manga in conception and execution, not only telling a tight new story each chapter but adding to the overarching plot each time using only 2-4 pages of intro and outro exposition for pacing in what is essentially a yonkoma.

The stepmom lived, but I don't think she's getting out of it consequence free. Your elementary school aged child with signs of abuse all over his body being found having killed himself would look bad even in isolation. But there is also the murder of a police officer traced back to the same child and her husband is missing.
At best, she's going to be a pariah. And there's enough evidence to get a conviction for something related to Yuuma's abuse should the police care to pursue such a case. Which they probably will due to her apparent association with Takayanagi's death.

Best Case: Japan's 100% Conviction Rate and ability to hold people without charging them until they confess works against her and she's wrongly (but rightly) convicted for both her husband's disappearance and Yuuma's death. I mean there's bound to be healed scarring discovered on the outside and internals of his body from the physical abuse at autospy, coupled with Officer Takayanagi's leftover cases notes, plus I'm sure the neighbors could hear all of the yelling and DV sounds emanating from their house but being Japanese just wouldn't saying anything until after it becomes a (double) homicide investigation incident.

Just look at that shit-eating smirk of self-satisfaction she has in the 4th panel of >>283419788 while Yuuma is on the floor getting the shit kicked out of him. I hope she can never turn her head from side-to-side again.

The last panel here is rather ominous >>283419747. But it was also a dream and Hina was telling the story at that point, so it isn't reliable.
But then Yuuma's remark to her here >>283419941 is kind of suspicious. It could just be him objecting to someone he doesn't know well acting like she knows how he feels. Considering the pacing and direction of the story, I think this editor would make even Kazuhiko Torishima happy.

I don't think it was a coldblooded murder. Slowly escalating violence is more typical for this kind of abuser. The later stepmom might've been in the picture but he didn't need extra motivation to hurt his family. The way the mom's ghost attacked the stepmom and Takayanagi first and not the dad is strange and can be explained in various ways. Yuuma's odd comment to Hina makes the most sense to me if his mom tended to make excuses for her husband's behavior like a lot of DV victims do.

She'll get better soon now that the curse on her's been broken with the death of the creepy brat (+ghost bitch fucking off back to Hell). And everyone can see that she's more likely to be the victim rather than the suspect, seeing from her various injuries.

She has the corpse of her emaciated, injury covered prepubescent child in her house. And she's the only adult who has been there in two weeks.
