Watched it this month for Halloween, and I was pleasantly surprised by it. The beginning is slow, but it helps building up the mystery and terror of the show and the second half is very cathartic and makes the struggle of the first episodes worth it. The show is surprisingly creepy for an anime, who aren't exactly the best at horror, with an OST perfect for this kind of anime. It's not a sakugafest, but the combination of OST, art and voice delivery makes it very enjoyable. Doctor Ozaki is the best character by far, with buff old man being the best supporting chara.
Also, if possible, don't miss the special episodes of the show (episodes 20.5 and 21.5 respectively), they're actually an expansion of the main story and tells what happened with some supporting characters and explains why a certain event in the finale that can come as an asspull happens. Plus, best girl is the main character of the second episode, so there's that.

The Shiki's only real power is the one to control the mind of the people they suck the blood to (along with seeing better in the darkness), other than that they're normal humans strength wise, and they're also limited by their weakness to sun and the fact they cannot enter a home without being invited first (hence why they use the mind control technique). They were so successful at the begininng because
1) they attacked a secluded villaged with little contact with the outside, so they could operate without the intervention of the exterior
2) they attacked people who were alone by surprise during the night when they can see better
3) people didn't believe in their existence until based doctor exposed Lady Gaga Shiki with Natsuno's help
4) they were hard carried by Tatsumi who's the superior Shiki specimen
Take those advantages out of them and ultimately they're just pitiful vampiric corpses
