Dude I was 15 in 2008 and watching anime was not such a big deal. It's true that it wasn't mainstream but there were still plenty of kids into naruto/dbz/pokemon and nobody cared.

Nobody cares if you watch random seasonal isekai #587382 now or random high school battle harem #577573 back in 2008. You would just not have anybody to talk about it because as you said they are not popular with normalfags.

Of course you can't expect people to not tease you for watching some very girly anime like Yuri Yuri as a boy or something like that the same way they would tease you if you listened to Brittney spears or watched movies like Mean Girls as a boy back in the day.
