My point was that "Army of One" has no bearing on the original Japanese, it's pure fan creation by the translator. Calling it 'The Stitchy-itchy Curse' would be just as accurate and make as much sense as calling it 'Army of One'.

That would go against the point of the story. You can't intuit how the tree notices you just like a mosquito can't intuit how the human notices him sucking blood. It is beyond us.

I am a fellow black paradox chad.
It captured that "dream logic" feeling better than any other story I've read.
By dream logic I mean how in a dream you can be walking down the street one minute and then on a pirate ship the next and your brain just fills in the gaps so it makes sense at the time but when you wake up you're like wtf was that about.

Don't get me wrong I like his one-shots too but I think it's commonly accepted that endings aren't Ito's forte.
You have some of his stories which knock it out the park like The Long Dream and then you have stories like pic related (a story I also love) which don't even try.
I'm not asking for everything to be wrapped up neatly, just something better than "and then I fainted".

the honey is also addictive and basically kills you by making everything else taste bad.
Since the tribe considers the tree a god, it must be reserved for priests or religious sacrifices.
I really liked the way Ito leaves clues about the tribe and the honey so that the reader can then make their own conjectures.
