Frieren being “inspired by SAO” is such a lazy take. SAO is a video game deathmatch with a power fantasy wrapped around tech drama. Frieren is a post-heroic road trip about grief, time, and learning how to understand people who don’t live as long as you do. They’re operating on completely different wavelengths - SAO is about surviving in an artificial world; Frieren is about existing after a real one has already ended. The only thing they share is “fantasy + magic,” which is like saying every isekai owes something to Dragon Quest. If anything, Frieren feels closer to Mushishi or Kino’s Journey than to any MMO story. Calling it “SAO-inspired” just tells on yourself for not knowing how to tell vibes apart.

The idea is half-correct in that the game is very influential, yet ignores every other game ever made and how they influence isekai, up to, for example, games before or adjacent to DQ, or modern game references in isekai. It's therefore reductionist.
Worse of all, SAO is an mmo. DQ is a single-player game. There are other series that followed the mmo craze along SAO and it's crazy to believe it's somehow reduced to DQ when that received one MMO years later-seemingly *after* the wave started. It's evidenced that the idea is merely a hasty generalization.
