I really liked the cast in general. If I had to choose, Ichigo and Aoi would probably be my favorites, but they're mostly all really good. As far as individual episodes go, the ones that come to mind are episode 79, 83-85 and 89. There is probably some recency bias since I don't remember the specifics of early episodes very well, but I really liked the focus on the side characters and the pairings that these episodes had. I also liked Akari's episodes and am excited to see more of her.

As far as the story overall, it really felt like they had no real idea what they were doing and where things were going after the first half. You'd think adding a rival school would add some drama and tension to the story, but the students mostly felt like just another group of people for the characters to befriend, and they just got along so well so fast that all the tension and sense of rivalry just kinda vanished into nothingness. Mizuki on the other hand worked really well as a seemingly undefeatable yet still friendly rival who consistently pushed the story and the characters forwards in both the first half and at the very end, and it is no coincidence that the show started getting really exciting again once she returned to the spotlight.

I totally get that, those are some really great episodes. Looking at the episode list, that's a real hotstreak around that point, I can see why it hooked you again around there. That dorkpire episode where she shows her normal self is one of my absolute favorites, too. and the dorkpire netorilu episode has aged like a fine wine

It's pretty funny that you fell into that vibe relatively quickly, because that isn't really going to go away for the rest of the franchise either. There's still fantastic characters and episodes in the other shows, but you're always gonna have the feeling that they just threw a bunch of stuff at the wall and are seeing what sticks. There's some understandable and realistic financial and production explanations as to why that happened after OGkatsu, but hopefully it doesn't dissuade you from checking out some of the later entries too, they're still really worth it! You'll really enjoy Akarigen if you thought the baby otter was adorable, seeing her growth into a full fledged idle is really inspiring.

To a certain type of individual, seeing that experimentation process in and of itself can be interesting, but other people prefer to just have a strong core concept that is faithfully executed and not deviated from.
