Hiro is such a free spirit that's why something like that happened. It's interesting how the manga changed after the anime announce. It feels like at the beginning Hiro just wanted to draw feet and explore anatomic possibilities, and then got bored of it and started thinking about a story to give to these characters, and since it had the attention of yuri fans the author just went with it. That's not that common, most yuri series just say they're yuri from the start, and even so, some of them don't deliver. So disappointment is more common than yuri surprise.

Even some series like Saki or Slime 300 only deliver yuri jokes even though the authors say they're yuri but don't develop or confirm anything in the actual series.

Here is what the hook is going to be.
Yuwa is going to catch them in town. Komichi is going to tell her Mom that she is dating Erika.
And then Yuwa is going to come clean that she also dated girls when she was at Ryobai too.

And then for the next however many years that Hiro decides to grind out the manga, there will always be this hook. Will Komichi stay with Erika or will she choose having children like her mother did?
