Kinnikuman was about a super strong but dumb protagonist who eats a lot. He is secretly an alien who was raised on Earth. He was trained by his master Kamehameha, who lives in an island (of Hawaii in this case). It had tournament arcs. It had numerical power levels as a plot point, and they would be overcome by the protagonist increasing his power level due to his emotional state. Dead characters would regularly be revived. Villains would often become allies. Basically most things people associate with Dragon Ball are Kinnikuman things that Toriyama was probably parodying (power levels in DBZ are obviously a parody and not meant to be taken seriously IMO), or doing coincidentally.

Fun fact: I remember Saori being really hated back then because she was an annoying, spoiled bitch in the beginning. I know I'm an outlier but I was a huge fan that watched it every saturday on Toonami. I got all the figures Bandai released, and I mean all of them since KB Toys clearanced them out since no one wanted them. The 5" figures had great detail and articulation and their cloths formed. In a way way better than Myth Cloths since you can actually pose them and the sculpts of the armors work since they don't disasemble.
There were also some 8" figures that you could put their armor on, it was plastic but who cares, they looked good for the time.
I also got a bunch of the DVDs but the DVDs were uncensored but they had a different dub with shittier voices. I wish I could find downloads to the original KOTZ dub.

I gave it a chance after hearing some seemingly hyperbolic praise but it really is the spring fountain of Shonen. The power-scaling is compact and tasteful, the characters are all interesting and with just enough layering in characterization and the art/worldbuilding/lore/fights are all excellent. Highly recommended with full force.
