The experimental anime boom of the 00s was a byproduct of the success of Evangelion. Some producers genuinely believed that the public was into deep, borderline incomprehensible arthouse shows. Of course they all flopped and eventually everyone realized that Eva was only successful because of the 14 year old girls in skintight suits.

Because the more global anime gets, the more things try to appeal to the least common denominator.

Also if you liked his directing in Tehxnolyze you should watch the Shigurui anime, which he also directed. Too bad it only covers like 1/3 of the manga.

Sadly, now anime is too popular to die, but I still hold a small hope that one day small groups of people will come together to create niche anime again, just like in the 80s. Perhaps anime is about to have its renaissance, maybe one day we'll have something similar to the indie video game scene, And yes, there is anime created by a single person, but those works are rare and very short.
