Is mahjong manga/anime ded? Or is it still alive in raws and just no scanlation team picking anything up? Would AI translation work on this type of manga, seems like much tighter context could help with the biggest hurdle machine translation has with japanese (unless it's mahjong in braincrack context ala kaiji)

For me, it's Harada Katsumi.

is mahjong actually developed there? Always assumed it's a 'girls life' kinda manga with mahjong being incidental (they need a hook, but it's unimportant, just like solo camping is thinly veiled romance story, camping is just a tool to show more food/single girls that hit on MC)

They play lots of mahjong but it's superpowers mahjong, at least in the main series. Aka the one where they discuss their powers but you don't really see hands develop in a tactical way like you'd expect in so-called "braincrack" stories. To be fair this also applies to a lot of other mahjong manga that don't involve cute girls. It's not that easy to write good mahjong setups.
pic unrelated btw, this one delivers on that side

yeah the last 'proper' mahjong anime we had (Ice cold thingy with subs from anon) was sadly very bad on mahjong side and was mostly yakuza vs SE asian gangs story with blood and gore the main draw, mahjong was just magic to push story forward, shame

also touhai is free on youtube. Animation is not that good, but it's nice. live action is better

yes and no, it's not an analysing mahjong hand/round manga, but it is totally centered around mahjong and absurdly unlikely hands, so in the end ends up being more mahjong centric even as it is as you say mostly political and ironic, but in theory you can move your thumb so fast to get 13 white dragons

well, in that case Saki would also be mahjong, the incidental parts like superpowers don't negate that they play mahjong in a tournament. It is no Pon no Michi.

Mukoubuchi is nice, why won't they resume translation. It's not akagi level but still was great. Btw Muteki no hito is back from hiatus, but they're taking forever, look on reddit for a fantranslation by one guy, he translated the remaining 18-19 chapters and has a google drive with the pdfs, best of both worlds, liar game with mahjong, top notch
