Never watched Bleach but I agree, there's something about Rukia that's very appealing. Has that "it" girl factor. Kinda reminds me of Tsuyu from MHA, who has a different appeal but still her design stands out to me, as someone who didn't really get into the series.

It doesn't take long to read because the chapters are so light on dialog for the vast majority of the manga, and only one whole arc (Fullbring) and about 70% of TYBW are outright bad. I think it's worth reading just because Kubo is a really good illustrator. That being said, it has a ton of issues, subpar storytelling and very uninspired character writing. So without the lens of nostalgia, it's pretty weak on the whole. But the manga is definitely the better version of the story than the anime. Though I guess people tend to think the anime improves TYBW a fair bit, but I don't really take that seriously because as soon as the anime adaptation of that arc was announced revisionist history kicked in and people started pretending that it was actually popular and well-liked when in reality most people hated it when it was releasing weekly.

I don’t like TYBW either. And I predicted it’s decline before airing. But the manga is very poor in terms of character relationships and proper worldbuilding. I think Bleach is good to decent up until the end of the fullbring arc.

She's on the very first page of the manga, she's the reason Ichigo became a Shinigami, she has really good chemistry with Ichigo and the goal of the first big story arc is to save her from being executed. Everything spelled out main heroine so it's not hard to see why she ended up being the "clear choice" for the fanbase.

What happened is that I once saw a Fairy Tail lewd AMV when I was 13 that got me wanting to watch FT for the PLOT, but by mere association I got it mixed up with Bleach after a month or two had passed since I watched the AMV, so I jumped into Bleach expecting FT, but kept watching even after I realized it was something else because Bleach happened to be cooler and more intriguing than I was horny for Lucy at the time. Now, Rukia, since you mention her, stood out to me as a fantastic female character in that she was remarkably noble and likeable without relying on love or sex appeal to be popular (even though she's fairly charming), the kind of girl you're not particularly into but strongly admire and wouldn't mind going all the way with. And so it wouldn't be after roughly 80 episodes of Bleach (things lost steam after Soul Society and the anime started to feel like a chore) that I would pick up FT as a 14 year old. I got into Bleach as a detour, but it's one I don't regret taking.
