I understand you fear this could mean studios may feel more inclined to westernize their productions to fit the international demographic but doesn´t it actually means the opposite? Many of us watch anime precisely because western media has become unwatchable and want something different.
Luckily westernized "anime" only manages to achieve circumstantial popularity. Like Edge Runners, it was hot stuff when it came out but it is no longer relevant and i don´t think it´s on anyone´s top 10 or top 20 except people that have seen very little anime and have no frame for comparison.
China may be able to satisfy that demand instead of japan but most of what they make is cheap CGI looking stuff... Maybe Korea will jump on that train, they have that weird cultural mixing going on already.
Japan should just keep doing what´s always done. If it ain´t broken don´t fix it. Specially considering KnY movie became such a success. I still can´t believe something so basic and shallow is more successful than ghibli or anime author movies like Mamoru Oshii or Satoshi Kon (no, actually i can totally believe it)
