I just finished this series. It feels like a time machine story. It had a losing your best buddy event too which I thought was nice. The story took place in the late 90's and ended in the 2010's. Even though timeline wise only a year had passed. That ending hit hard.

Eh, I have never thought they sounded Japanese. They sound like Italians singing in English.
Italian and Japanese do share similar vowel sounds, so maybe some of that is mixed in the English rendition, but the hurdles of a Japanese singing in English are pretty high (moras, wholly different consonant sounds, etc), so they tend to sound a lot worse than Italians.
